We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

What was your thought process behind starting your own business?

My design studio actually started on an accidental basis. I initially started my Instagram @lisachendesign in 2018 as a place to display my work as a portfolio platform. This was a time where businesses, especially freelancer graphic designers weren’t really on Instagram trying to seek business off the platform. I then started receiving enquiries for Branding projects for small businesses which was something I never expected. I then started using the platform to share the work I was doing for these small businesses. Then covid came, and this changed everything. As most small businesses had to shut down, this gave them more time to shift their focus to their business and restructure or re-market their brand, ready for post covid. The enquiries for new Branding and Websites started fluctuating. During this time, I was still working full-time at an advertising agency as a graphic designer. Once I finished my 9-6 full-time job, I would immediately log onto my freelance clients. I worked around the clock, working up to 6 hours a day after my full time job to try keep up on the demand and meet deadlines. The best part was, I always loved logging on and working on my freelance clients as I really love what I do and the type of projects I get to work on outside of my full-time job.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the founder and designer behind the boutique design studio, Lisa Chen Design. I am a passionate freelance creative based in Melbourne, Australia. With a degree in Communication Design, I thrive on working with businesses in the fashion, beauty, wellness and lifestyle industries.

I have worked in the design industry professionally for the past six years, with experience working in a creative advertising agency as well as working in-house as a graphic designer in some of Australia’s leading fast-fashion retailers.

Throughout my career, I have been lucky enough to work with a range of brands and projects across an array of industries. I have a passion for working with female entrepreneurs, helping them make their mark in the business world and level up with a strong and impactful first impression.

One of proudest project’s of Lisa Chen Design is the recent rebrand of a major Australian Skincare company, Alya Skin which launched at the end of 2023. I gave the skincare brand a facelift, by redesigning their packaging which is stocked in many department stores around Australia. This was a huge opportunity as Alya Skin chose a small boutique studio like mine to rebrand their image.

Not only do I work with some amazing small Australian businesses, I also work with clients all around the world, including clients from Dubai, America, England, New Zealand and more!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my parents Greg and Wendy, along with my partner Dan for their continuous support in my freelance career and running Lisa Chen Design. I also want to thank all of my clients for trusting me with their business, especially those earlier clients back in 2018 when I was just starting.
