We had the good fortune of connecting with Lina Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’m the founder and creator of “Girl Time San Diego – The Original”, a Facebook community of 19,000 women in San Diego County, where women share information about everyday life and support each other. One of the most popular posts in our community is when women post about their single male friends who are great guys, and recommended them to the other ladies in the group. They tell us why they think he’s a great guy and what makes him tick. The response is amazing and it happens time after time. One guy was contacted by almost 200 women looking to date him!

I’ve also heard from many of my female friends that regular dating apps are problematic, as a lot of men (and women) lie about their age, height, interests, etc. Posting pictures from 10 years prior, saying they are single when in fact they’re not, and making other misleading statements about themselves.

Additionally, I have all these great guy friends that can’t find the right women on dating apps because they find it hard to describe themselves, or they keep getting passed over because they feel awkward talking about themselves so they sell themselves short.

So I thought – we need an app that creates a place for women to find men that have been vouched for by other women! An app that takes the pressure off the guy to write about himself – instead his good female friends share with other women what a hidden gem he is. This is where the idea for our “Pitch Me” app came from!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So I’m a bit altruistic, as my business partner Todd tells me all the time, lol.  I started a healthy fast food restaurant in Houston because I wanted to help change busy people’s diets by making healthy food more accessible and available. Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey hit my restaurant and we couldn’t survive. I started Girl Time San Diego – The Original because I realized when I first moved here three years ago there was no community platform for women to create friendships and support each other. I am a lifelong volunteer for animal rescue organizations as I’ve been a dog foster home for 22 years and have fostered over 100 dogs and cats over the years. I find that I put more energy into things I feel good about rather than focusing on just making money.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I can’t wait until my best friend Janet comes to visit! I would start with grabbing a breakfast burrito from Sara’s Mexican Food and check out Mission Beach Boardwalk starting on the south end, so she could see the ocean and beach and hopefully see Slo-Mo on the boardwalk. Then I would take her to Dog Beach in Ocean Beach, because she loves dogs as much as I do and would love to see how happy dogs are running in and out of the ocean and along the beach. Then watch one of our incredible sunsets from Cannonball Sushi or Waterbar in Pacific Beach. We would definitely go to both San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park because she would love to see all the animals that have been rescued and rehabilitated there. And of course Balboa Park with the gorgeous buildings, landscaping, and incredible history there. We love to eat out and have beautiful views, so we would go to Coasterra, Bali Hai, Dukes La Jolla, and have breakfast at World Famous. I think San Diego has some of the best Italian food in the US, so we would go to all of my favorites: Cesarina, The Red Door, Piacere Mio (which we go to every other week… shout-out to Clemente our favorite server!), and Parma Cucina for their out-of-this-world lasagna!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, definitely the women in Girl Time San Diego – The Original. They not only started the trend but continue to inspire new ideas and support each other everyday!
