We had the good fortune of connecting with Lily Mathews and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Be Still Candle was a calling for me. I knew that if I didn’t just DO it I would regret it down the road.

I really couldn’t have picked out a crazier time to launch Be Still Candle when I did. We (husband and I) had our hands already full with our existing company, our 2 boys and so much more but I thought to myself…”I will figure it out”

Sometimes the “starting” part of a new project is the hardest part but you have to just rip the bandaid off and simply give that idea life. Then (with focus and consistency) the rest will follow.

Several things inspired me to start Be Still Candle, one of those being my obsession for hosting. I love to celebrate life and put table escapes together for the ones I love. Candles have always been a huge part of that for many years. I definitely think that being passionate about what you sell or the business you start helps facilitate some of the many hurdles entrepreneurship throws at you.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Be Still Candle is fairly new but I am taking everything I have learned from my husband’s and I existing company and applying it to this new venture.

Every business you start requires you to be fearless. Even when the sales are low and noone knows about you yet. You have to stay focused and tune out the outside noise.

I am very excited to see Be Still Candle grow and be a gentle reminder for our customers to slow down and enjoy the moment. Our candles are more than just a product they are a practice. A practice of slowing down and simply BE STILL.
I am really looking forward to adding more mindful products that our customers can incorporate to their relaxation routines and their special life celebrations.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego is the best that’s why I’m never leaving lol
My favorite place is La Jolla. So I would spend most of my time there.
I would start our morning with my favorite breakfast, fig tree cafe in mission valley. The berry French toast is the best!
Then we would make out way to UTC for my favorite hot almond milk mocha at La Colombe. It’s foamy, not too sweet and the perfect amount of caffeine for a fun La Jolla day.

If we are feeling active and adventurous we would head over to do my favorite hike in Torrey Pines or the paragliding port. The views are stunning!

For a more relaxed time my favorite spit is the scripps pier and tide pools. I love to spend hours there. There’s so much sea life and it’s absolutely breathtaking.

I love the cove for shopping and walking around.

Finishing a La Jolla day at Javiers or Lucrezia would be the cherry on top!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband and best friend. Who I have learned a lifetime worth of knowledge from in every aspect. He started his 1st business at the young age of 23 and to see everything he has accomplished while being the most hands on and loving father is truly a movie in itself.
He inspires me daily and is my biggest support in life.
