We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Yelin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As I paint, I find myself tapping into a profound sense of inner peace and connection with myself. Seeking a sense of serenity, contentment, and happiness in my personal life, I strive to imbue these qualities into my art. My ultimate goal is to create abstract paintings that inspire others, evoking feelings of tranquility and joy. I believe that harmonious and calming art can have a positive impact on the world in several ways. First, it provides a much-needed respite from the stresses of daily life. When people are exposed to art that is soothing and serene, it helps them relax and reduce feelings of anxiety and tension. This can be especially important in today’s fast-paced and often chaotic world.

Additionally, abstract art can be a powerful tool for fostering empathy and understanding. When people encounter art that is different from what they are used to, it can broaden their perspective and help them appreciate the diversity of human experience. Abstract art can be particularly effective in this regard, as it often invites viewers to bring their own interpretations and experiences to the work.

Finally, abstract art can be a source of inspiration and motivation for people. When people encounter art that is beautiful and meaningful, it can inspire them to be more creative, to strive for excellence, and to make positive changes in their own lives and in the world around them.

Overall, I hope my art art can help create a more peaceful, empathetic, and creative world. I believe it has the power to uplift people’s spirits, broaden their horizons, and inspire them to be their best selves.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
As a scientist turned visual artist, I have embrace my decisions without regret and focus on moving forward rather than looking back. During my time as a scientist, I discovered the beauty of mindfulness meditation through a few courses I took, which ultimately led me to start painting. Though I had no prior experience in painting, I allowed myself to flow freely into the creative process without self-judgment or restraint. This state of mind allowed me to fully engage with my emotions, be present in the moment, and experience a sense of calm that I had never encountered before in my scientific pursuits. Over time, my passion for art grew, and I found myself eagerly awaiting my next opportunity to connect with the colors, textures, and brushes of painting. This newfound joy inspired me to pursue a life centered around the creation of art. The transition process wasn’t easy. The courageous decision to transition from my established career as a scientist to pursue a new path as a visual artist required a great deal of resilience and willingness to take risks as I had to navigate uncertainty and potential challenges along the way.

Additionally, during the process of learning painting techniques, I had to let go of any self-judgment and embrace the creative process with an open mind. This required resilience in the face of potential self-doubt and frustration, as I persisted and allowed myself to learn and grow through the experience.
Finally, I were able to overcome any potential obstacles or setbacks and create a life centered around my passion for art. This required resilience in the face of potential challenges and a willingness to adapt and evolve as I pursued my new path.

I believe that the only way to make big changes in life is through resilience, courage, and willingness to take risks and pursue your passions despite potential obstacles or setbacks along the way.
My goal is to inspire others through my story and my art. By creating paintings that radiate a sense of serenity and calmness, I hope to provide a foundation for people to find the courage to make positive changes in their lives. I believe that art can be a powerful force for transformation, and I strive to infuse my work with a sense of hope and inspiration that resonates with viewers.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s my favorite! I absolutely love the San Diego area! There’s so many things to do. I’d start with Balboa Park, exploring the many museums, gardens and landmarks within the park. Including the San Diego Museum of Art, the Botanical Building and the Japanese friendship Garden. In the evening, we’d make our way to Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego, known for its nightlife and dining options.
We could also drive up the coast to La Jolla, known for its beaches, while watching seals and sea lions and perhaps taking a dip in the ocean. In the evening, we could head to Old Town with plenty of dining options and to absorb some mexican vibes.
Another place that I love is the Cabrillo National Monument., it commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 and offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. For a fun day I’d visit Pacific Beach, a coastal neighborhood known for its beautiful beaches, lively nightlife, and laid-back California lifestyle. The main attraction of Pacific Beach is its namesake beach, which stretches for miles along the coastline. The beach is popular for swimming, surfing, sunbathing, and volleyball. There are also a variety of beachfront bars, restaurants, and shops.
I could never leave the area without visiting the gorgeous downtown in Encinitas, the music, food and people make this city a vibrant place!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My journey as an artist owes everything to the people around me who have supported and encouraged me along the way. My dear husband, in particular, has been my rock, cheering me on and reminding me to always create art that makes me happy. With a background in science and two decades of research under my belt, I took a leap of faith three years ago and became a full-time artist. This decision brought with it numerous personal and family challenges, but my wonderful husband has been by my side, my biggest champion.

On the professional front, I’ve been fortunate to have had several mentors who have each played a special role in my development. I must give a special shout-out to Jason Horejs, an art gallery owner and mentor who teaches artists how to secure gallery representation and sell their work. Jason has generously shared his knowledge and expertise with me, and his inspiring story has taught me never to give up, stay focused, and find my way.
