We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristyn Harvey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristyn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think it is important to take well educated risks in your career and the term “failing upwards” has always motivated me. If you fail then you learn from every mistake and pick yourself up and just keep pushing up that hill. I was at a point in my life where I had already spent a decade working as an Intensive Care Nurse and had two kids under the age of 4, I knew I had the talent and drive so I took a risk and completely changed careers. I think as long as you are willing to put in the work, learn and absorb every chance you get then it helps take some of the unpredictability out of taking the risk.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My design studio focuses on creating spaces that are intuitive and help make life less complicated for those living there. As a nurse I loved creating that bond with my patients and families, I saw my bond with them as part of the healing journey. Giving them reassurance and making their concerns feel heard was important to me then and is what leads me in my journey as a designer. I want to get to know the pain points in your life, is it that morning routines with the kids is just way harder than it needs to be, how can we do our best to make your home make sense for you. In a recent kitchen design I incorporated a breakfast station for the kids. We put utensils, bowls and cereal containers all in one tower of drawers, placed a beverage fridge with milk next to that then seating further down the line. Once you are done you keep going around the island and put your dirty dishes in the dishwasher on your way out the door. The goal is to empower the family’s 4 kids to serve their own breakfast and also direct the flow of traffic so no one is bumping into each other and needing to use the same area at the same time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a low maintenance beach girl so I would say lets grab some burritos and head to Cardiff! The kids can play on their boogie boards and we can sneak some wine and pizza! I also love to cook! I grew up in Bangkok, Thailand and what keeps me grounded and close to home is thai cooking so you’re all welcome to come over for some sticky rice, thai barbecue chicken wings with a spicy tamarind dipping sauce.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my husband, Scott. He has always been my biggest supporter and was the one that believed that I could do anything I set my mind to. He is my sounding board and when I was considering changing careers he was the one that told me to just follow what makes me the happiest and the rest will follow.
