We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Conrad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been moved by the creative process. Acting and entertainment are a big part of my life. However, my exposure to the fine arts growing up was vast as well. While I enjoyed the dramatic arts, my father John Conrad, who is a master ceramist, was emulating incredible fortitude while pushing for bigger and better results in his own research. His chemistry based work was specifically on metallic coatings on porcelain. Eventually this led to something that had truly never been seen before in the medium. His latest chromatic coating inspired me to start up Moondust Concepts. MC is hand crafted designer art-wear and accessories. These designs combine traditional ceramic techniques with futuristic molecular technology. My first collection was recently debuted at Fashion Week San Diego, and showcased at Sothebys in NYC this summer. This was a proud moment for my family. It is because of my fathers life long hard work and passion, that I was inspired to pursue a business in designing fine art wear that is unique, and exclusive to Moondust Concepts. Every piece represents a legacy of discovery, and creative talent.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Color, color, color! Porcelain jewelry is classy and not commonly found. It is fragile and delicate. What sets my pieces a part from anything else, is the chromatic coating that is exclusive to MC. The top coat is made of a mixture of silica and metallic particles. The colorful refraction that reflects changes with the viewers angle! The pieces present the most challenge when they are in their rawest pre-fired form. They are so delicate. The final color result is so spectacular and playful. These artistic pieces often strike up conversation and intrigue.
Each piece is truly unique, and no two will ever be the same.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have lived in Southern California my whole life, so I am all for adventure!
I would begin by taking people to the Anza Borrego desert for a weekend of off roading and nature exploration.
Julian is fun to shop around, and grab some fresh apple pie. Follow that up with a mountain hike, and you had a fun filled day..
The beaches are a must. And if seeing wildlife is a highlight, observing the seals at the children’s pool in La Jolla is highlight for all.
Don’t ever leave without filling up on TACOS! We have the best Mexican food here. Cocina Del Charro in San Marcos is my favorite! Best authentic food and the service and staff top notch.. Ask for Gerri.
I also would recommend a trip to the Midway museum to enjoy some military history. Old Town San Diego, and Balboa Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout out is to John Conrad
