We had the good fortune of connecting with KP and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KP, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that taking risks are important. If you are pursuing a goal or a dream it may require you to take certain risks. It isn’t the easiest thing to do. It can be a scary thing if you are someone who normally treads carefully. I’ve taken certain risks and it helped put me in a better position in my music career. Sometimes they won’t always work out the way that you imagined. I believe the biggest lesson of risk taking is knowing that you are willing to do things that may not be the most comfortable in order to achieve something greater. It has to be for a greater purpose!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I created my own genre of music which is called Soul’School which is how I describe the music that I create. It’s a combination of R&B Soul and Old School. I do consider my music a combination of both. I started singing in the church choir. My Mom raised me up in the church. I would say I get some of my influence from Gospel. I was also raised around a lot of R&B Soul like Mary J Blidge, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, etc. My old school influences came from singers like Betty Wright, Al Greene, Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, etc. I recorded my first song in the studio with my cousin/producer Steven aka Steve OG. He actually played a big part in me becoming a recording artist. One of the songs we did together “Brim Love” hit over 1 million views on YouTube. One of my biggest challenges has been and still is at time is financing myself. Being an independent artist is very challenging and expensive. Along the way I’ve learned ways to finance myself and still see revenue. It’s a work in progress but with time comes perfection. I want the world to know that it wasn’t easy getting to where I’m going but I’ll be there!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would for sure take them to the beach. We’d also visit some of the most notable restaurants. I’d also take them by some of our open mic events to get a feel for our vibe, music and culture.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my partner Kandice. She’s been so supportive. She’s helped me push through in more ways than she knows. She’s awesome at helping me with new ideas and helping me build off of ideas that I’ve come up with. I would also like to shout out Ryan Anthony for being such a true gentleman and all around genuine individual since the day him & I met. He has given me so many gems that have helped me improve as a singer and recording artist. He believes in me more than I believe in myself at times. He is so selfless and also very supportive.
