We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Magers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I started Magers Photography six years ago with a dream of what it could become, but I had no idea how much sacrifice it would require to get there.
Launching Magers Photography really pushed me out of my comfort zone as an introvert, but the determination to show myself that I CAN and I WILL keep chasing my dreams has been a wonderful motivator throughout my journey.
I always knew that success wouldn’t come overnight and I was okay with that. Still, it was tough at times to see other photographers thriving or to compare my work with theirs, which added quite a bit of pressure on me back then.
It’s so true that comparison can steal your joy, especially when you’re still figuring out how to run your business, develop your editing style, create those trendy reels, pose clients, and set prices. The best piece of advice I can share is simply to BE YOU! The people who appreciate your work are the ones meant for you. And remember, it’s perfectly fine if not everyone loves what you do. Stay consistent, show up for yourself and your clients, attend workshops, connect with fellow photographers, put in the hard work, don’t give up, listen to podcasts—and most importantly—have FUN!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a Wedding & Portrait Photographer soaking up the sun in beautiful San Diego. I can’t tell you how thrilled I get about those sessions that really let my creativity shine! It’s something I take great pride in—my ability to adapt and explore various styles as a photographer. While my main focus is on Weddings and Portraits, I absolutely love branching out and diving into different creative adventures. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing all sorts of photography styles, from fitness and newborns to products, small businesses, graduations, couples, elopements, retreats, and studio sessions. It’s been such an incredible journey over the past six years as I continue to learn and grow in my craft. I’m always on the lookout for ways to perfect my art!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend just came to visit, and we had such an amazing time together! We enjoyed a fantastic beach day with our kids and went out for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants in the beautiful city of Coronado! We even roller-bladed along the boardwalk from Mission Beach all the way to Ocean Beach, where we stopped by the BEST little Mexican restaurant that was a total gem—those hole-in-the-wall spots are always the best!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband has always been my biggest supporter! I really enjoy sharing my dreams with him, and he’s always ready to help me come up with ideas on how we can achieve them together.
Podcasts have been such a wonderful source of inspiration and creativity for me. I recently discovered a couple of podcasts called “Oh Shoot with Cassidy Lynn” and Nathan Chanski, which have been super helpful in guiding me through photography and the journey of being a small business owner.
I’m also really lucky to have a close-knit group of local photographers I can share ideas with, and I truly appreciate them!
