We had the good fortune of connecting with Keyondra Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keyondra, what inspires you?
My family inspired me to get into the music industry. My great-grandmother sang with Total Eclipse and The Versales. My grandfather DJ’d alongside Dr. Dre in the 80s and 90s. Then, my uncles, a few cousins, and their friends started a rap group called Da Troops Inc.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve served in the U.S. Navy for about six and a half years. I joined as an E-1, and within my first year, I climbed through the ranks and was promoted to an E-4. I deployed in 2018 with USS John C Stennis, and after 3 years onboard, I then moved to San Diego, where I currently reside. During my Navy career, I was able to start a clothing brand called Hustle Nation and then attended The Los Angeles Film School, where I got my Bachelor of Science in Music Production. During these last six and half years, I had to overcome many challenges. When starting my business and creating music, I had to overcome the fact that not everyone was going to like what I put out. I learned that if I believed in my business and music, then that’s all that mattered, and those who wanted to support me would support me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area for a week-long trip, the first place I would take her is to Ocean Beach to soak up the sun. Then to Gossip Grill for good drinks, food, and amazing shows. I would also take her to a Padre’s game (if in season) to experience what it is like to be a San Diegoan. For an amazing dog, I’ll take her to Barrio Logan and try Barrio Dogg. Or take her to Raki Raki for some delicious ramen. I’d also take her to Chicano Park to see the art and learn some history from locals who love to share their stories. For a night out on the town, I would take her to the Gaslamp District to bar and club hop.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to my mom, siblings, family, and mentors for supporting and believing in me.
