We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenzie Alece and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenzie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always known from a young age that I wanted to do something creative for a career. I never saw myself sitting behind a desk doing a regular 9-5 job. When I was little, I developed a passion for fashion and started designing and sewing clothes for my stuffed animals, and from that point, my love for nails started to blossom. Since then, I have been known for my nails because I was always doing a different design or had them polished a fun color. I love that in this career no day is the same something new is happening everyday and that you can pull inspiration from anywhere. One of the best feelings is seeing the reaction of a client after you have finished their nails. I truly enjoy this career and I appreciate the fact that I’m able to make a client’s nails look like a masterpiece which in turn makes them feel great.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is that I was able to take a step away from my craft to experience new opportunities but in the end I circled back and reignited my love for the artistry with a pre-determined goal. I am proud of every set of nails that I complete whether it is a simple or complex nail design because each one is a new challenge. Firstly, I arrived where I am because of the passion for the work, being determined, and not afraid to put in the hard work. It’s not easy, it takes patience and skill, but I was able to overcome the challenges by reminding myself to celebrate the little wins especially while in school. Some of the lessons I have learned along the way is 1) Allow yourself to make mistakes; 2) Practice consistently; 3) Recognize there’s always room for improvement; and 4) Accept that it takes time to develop your rhythm and flow. I would like the world to know that my brand is the manifestation of a young girl’s love for nail art and her desire to create something that will make others happy and viewed everyday.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are many places that come to mind that I would show a friend who’s visiting. The first one would be Balboa Park to walk around, visit museums, check out the koi pond, the botanical building, and the Japanese friendship garden. The second place would be the Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown, it’s a nice and fun place to walk, do some shopping, and grab a bite to eat at Suckerfree Southern Plate & Bar. Lastly, for nightlife, depending on the mood, Gaslamp Quarter or Pacific Beach (PB) are the best options for a fun night out. Some other fun places to go are La Jolla Shores, Belmont Park, the Zoo, and Old Town which has a great Mexican restaurant called Cafe Coyote.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family, friends, and loved ones. Thank you all so much for the love, support, advice, and inspiration that you have given me.
