We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenton Hoppas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenton, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I mostly just wanted more freedom to explore and learn. I’ve always enjoyed wearing all the hats. I look at starting a business like taking a road trip. You have an idea of where you’d like to go, but you’re not married to how you get there. And the best things are the unplanned things. That’s the spirit of business ownership to me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My vision for art is to create engagement through my doodles. I put a lot to explore into the work I do. The bigger the piece the more there is to explore. I’ve had many clients say they keep discovering new things every time they look at the art. And when you stand back and view the work, I’d like for the viewer to simply feel happy.

Happy. That’s my life’s goal guess. To make happy walls. Whether it be a child’s bedroom wall, an office, a business, a restaurant, a parking garage, it doesn’t really matter as long as it’s a surface that can reach the viewer in a new and engaging way each time they look at it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Encinitas so it would be slightly repetitive I’m afraid. Eat at Swami’s Cafe, surf, hang out at the library, nap, make dinner at home with my daughter (13) and then go see a movie at La Paloma. I’d want to take them on the Coaster to Downtown and get coffee at the Mudbar on Columbia. Then just walk around downtown and see what happens. Then back to Encinitas! I love Encinitas. I don’t need to go far from home to have a good time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d say I’d give a shoutout to my parents. They were stuck in a system they felt powerless to break free from. That helplessness with their own situation fueled their support and encouragement for my brother and I to be supported in finding new opportunities they felt they never had. They always encouraged us to find opportunities that were challenging and had potential for growth. Growth both personally, financially, and spiritually.
