We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsie Hancock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelsie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Our time is extremely valuable. We are all taught what success is at a very young age. Do well in grade school, be in advanced placement classes, go to a good college, go work for a “great company,” and save for retirement so you can retire at 65. It’s this cycle of copy/paste societal success. It’s safe because those before us have gone and done it, and they turned out ok. But if you look at it, we will end up spending 80% of our lives around people who are not our family. We spend 80% of our lives not living our values because we are building someone else’ dream, in hopes to build our dream…but that doesn’t actually happen because we’re just living to work. After serving four years on active duty in the Marine Corps, I realized that I needed something different for my life which prompted different decisions and ways of thinking and challenged my WHY. I realized the follow: 1) I wanted to live my values every day instead of on PTO and holidays. 2) I wanted to focus my energy building my own dream, not someone else’. 3) I want the freedom to make decisions that enable a balanced lifestyle and continue to feed my why. 4) I wanted to monetize on my passions and teach others ways to live a more balanced life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started Troux North as a Life Coaching business with the intent to help others with some lifestyle changes. However, it really has turned into more of a travel and lifestyle blog with personal growth and development tools sprinkled throughout. Adventuring has really helped me through some tough times in my life. Often we allow work or other responsibilities to be the excuse for why we “can’t,” travel and explore, but I have found ways to prioritize those things within my 9-5 job, and I’d love to help others navigate their way to doing the same. When I was active duty in the Marine Corps, I really struggled with my identity and purpose. Travelling helped me disconnect and gave me a sense of peace. I really want to bring that to people in a personal way. Hopefully it can make a difference for someone. Through the niching process, I have really narrowed it down to focus on traveling and living what I’m most passionate about. The niching process can be quite frustrating, but once you get it locked down, you will KNOW you’re on the right track. (That is probably my biggest advice for anyone starting a business-ask yourself what problem you are here to solve!) Paralleling Troux North, I have also started an online outdoor apparel shop! I launched a soft opening a few months ago, but the Grand Opening is in the works! As I’ve been traveling, I have also been building inventory and creating content. (Please be on the lookout on my Instagram! @its.kelsiemarie). I think this is going to be what sets me apart from many travel bloggers. I am now and will be doing a lot of brand collaborations and affiliate programs, but what I also have to offer is my own brand (Eventyr Brand).
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This question is a great blog post! My top FAVORITE things to do in San Diego: 1) Hike Torrey Pines! The cliffs are incredible! 2) Le Papagayo Restaurant in Encinitas (they have the best sangria and mussels) 3) Sunset Cliffs for sunset photo ops 4) Queenstown Public House for an epic New Zealand brunch downtown 5) The Midway Museum is a classic San Diego staple 6) Swami’s Beach in Cardiff is by far my favorite beach! 7) Take surfing lessons in Pacific Beach 8) Get an acai bowl at Mad Beet 9) Herb & Sea for dinner in Encinitas followed by a glass of wine and live music at The Roxy 10) There’s also loads of hiking in Julian and Ramona and plenty of places to go SUP! 12) Also, Laguna Beach is worth the 45 minute trip if you want to switch things up! 13) Italian in LIttle Italy (you can’t go wrong!)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My best friend, Caroline Driehorst of Las Vegas, NV is one of my biggest inspirations and cheerleaders! We have been friends since high school, and she is a huge reason I have had the courage to pursue what I am doing. As she is also starting her own business, we often strategize together and push each other to take risks! You can follow more of her personal journey through scoliosis, chronic pain management, and lifestyle tips on her Instagram: @carolinedecoded
