Meet Kelli Pease | Gardener on a mission to share one million flowers

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelli Pease and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelli, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Southern California and always loved being in gardens. My first memory of nature is being at my grandmother’s house and going out into her beautiful rose garden. She was the one who taught me how to garden growing up and it’s so much fun to invite her over to my garden now so we can share the magic of gardening together.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Gardening started as a hobby during quarantine 2020. I had more time at home and had 2 garden beds that were ready to be transformed, so I figured why not! Once I started growing strawberries and arugula, I decided it would be fun to branch out to grow cut flowers and brighten people’s days in the neighborhood by giving them homegrown flowers as a random act of kindness whenever I could.
I got to work first by learning all I could about flower gardening. I took an online course through Floret Farm and hired a cut flower farmer consultant (Rachel from Psalter Farms) to come over and help me get started. The first season I tried to growing flowers, I was so proud of myself because I grew them from seed! I couldn’t believe that such beauty could come from nurturing a tiny seed. I didn’t understand at that time how much water they needed, so I ended up accidentally killing most of my flowers that season by not giving them enough water. Lesson learned!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots in San Diego include:
– The beach! Seaside Reef in Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach are two of my favorites.
– The Flower Fields in Carlsbad with thousands of the most beautiful ranunculus you’ll ever see
– Hiking Torrey Pines State Reserve overlooking the ocean
– Puesto in La Jolla for some of the best Mexican food in San Diego
– The Farmers Market in Encinitas or La Jolla

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shoutout and thank you to my parents, husband and extended family and friends for always giving me encouragement to keep going and helping in any way they can. I’m so grateful for you all!
