We had the good fortune of connecting with Kekoa Tsukiyama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kekoa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think that taking risks were very crucial in my career. It’s not an easy thing to do whatever it may be that you are risking or taking a chance on but if you believe in yourself enough it will work out. If you never take a chance you’ll never have a chance. For myself leaving Hawaii was a huge risk and very uncomfortable but I am very happy I did and I’m doing things and have been places I have never imagined. Even at a young age there was risks being taken. Not having a 9-to-5 job and trying everything to make sure I am able to survive off of my music wasn’t exactly fun or financially the greatest decision at times but it sure as hell beat a “job” and I’m glad I chose that route.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is Kekoa I am a singer/songwriter born in Maui and raised in Oahu, Hawaii. I perform live as a band or solo with my loop pedal setup. I would say my voice and versatility in genres I am able to sing is very special. That is also what I take the most pride in, my voice and writing. It took a lot to get to where I am today. Alot of risks, broken relationships, rejection, leaving my home where my friends and family are. The list goes on but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It wasn’t easy but I feel like my upbringing always helped me to stay mentally strong. To believe that everything will work out. I also have huge faith in GOD and great parents which helps a lot. If there’s one thing I would want the world to know about my story and maybe it can help as well is believe in yourself and trust in God. What you want WILL happen it’s just a matter of time. Never give up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First thing that comes to mind is Downtown SD and La Jolla Cove. Downtown has a lot of great food and bars. La Jolla cove is just a great site to see with all of the seals being out. Personally my favorite spots to eat would be Leilanis Cafe in PB, Fogo De Chao and Wonderland Ocean Beach.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
