Meet Katherine Muñiz | Fine Art and Mixed Media Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katherine Muñiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katherine, what do you attribute your success to?

A unique vision of being artistically different is the key factor behind my success.

When I display my art, I often hear the comments below:

“Wait?! Is that 3D?”
“Is it sticking out of the painting?”
“Wow, it is so different. I have never seen anything like that.”

Art enthusiasts walk by my art booth, do a double take, and then get really close to my art piece and realize that twine is attached to my paintings. Whether it is a Spanish Dancer’s dress, a ballerina’s tutu, or a wing of a bird; my technique of creating art out of two mediums; paint and twine, is what makes my art stand out.

As a self-taught painter, I had to come up with an artistic style to separate myself from all of the amazing artists in the world.  Therefore, I decided to enhance my paintings by crocheting twine, then, apply it to my paintings. This technique gives my art a 3D effect; it is my version of “Pop Art.”

One of my original art pieces is a mixed media butterfly. The left wing was created with painted abstract brush strokes, and the right wing was created with twine. I replicated the brushstrokes of paint with crocheted twine. That art piece sold to a prominent art collector.

Ingenuity is a key role in my artistic process. For example, I am creating an interactive mixed media piece. The piece is made from two canvas panels with painted vine of flowers on each side of the canvas. However, I also created a detachable vine of flowers with twine that can connect the two panels. It is up to the owner of that art piece to connect the vine made with twine to the other panel; or leave it hanging down. It will depend on the look of that art piece they want on that day; it is interactive, the collector then becomes the designer.

Influences that have inspired my art include master painters such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Vermeer, Frida Kahlo, and Diego Rivera. I created a Mixed Media Masterpiece series in which I replicate famous paintings, then add twine to various areas of the paintings making them my own rendition. These mixed media interpretations have taught me different techniques and styles that I continue to apply to my artwork.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

My career as an artist continues to evolve. I show my work at art events such as La Jolla Art and Wine Festival, San Diego Festival of the Arts, Carlsbad Art in the Village, Morro Bay in the Park, and Redlands Festival of the Arts. I have also participated in community events such as Riverside’s Art Museum’s Art Bark in the Park and Off the Wall.  I have several upcoming art shows in 2022 and hope to hold an art exhibition.

Keeping my art interesting and fresh is something I stive for, therefore, I am always trying to produce something new and exciting for art enthusiasts to enjoy. My next project is mixed media sculpting.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

The historic Mission Inn Hotel would be first on the list. It is a beautiful Riverside landmark that is picture perfect around every corner.

Also, Downtown Riverside has a variety of restaurants, novelty shops, and entertainment. The downtown area has something for everyone.

A huge factor of  succeeding as an artist is having the support of my husband and kids; so a big thank you goes out to them.
