We had the good fortune of connecting with Katey Sommers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my company back in 2019. I had no idea what I was doing, I just knew I wanted to do SOMETHING!
I was just a beginner welder at the time, and I loved to mess around with scrap pieces. I thought, how fun would it be to turn something I love into a business?
I knew it was going to be tricky, and it has definitely not been the easiest road but I love being able to run this shop the way that I always imagined.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I really want to create a space where people can appreciate the art that is welding. Whether you are in school, 30 years into the profession, or just having fun – I want my brand to be a place for all to enjoy. I really have been trying to create opportunities for others to explore welding. I did a student sponsorship program, and set up 20 students with all the welding school essentials. I also like to host a lot of giveaways on social media that encourage people to send me pictures of them creating something.
I guess I am trying to be the person/brand that I wish I had when I was first learning. Using my own experiences to help influence the younger generations and hopefully inspire others to join in trade work – especially girls like me who might need that extra push to just go for it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Escondido has a lot of hidden gems. If the timing is right, cruisin’ grand is always a fun time. I love going into all the small businesses and restaurants and just enjoying our town’s shops. Of course you have to go to the safari park – it’s right in our backyard and is a staple. Downtown San Diego also has some really fun bars and restaurants, even right by the water. I also absolutely adore the USS Midway, I’ve been going on tours there since I was in grade school.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
ERI Repro, in Escondido! They helped me with all of my printing, not just with some of the product I sell but with all my advertising needs and packaging. They were also one of the sponsors of the student welder program I did back in June 2021. They really helped pull it together, and we helped over 20 students get essentials for starting welding classes.
