We had the good fortune of connecting with Justine Reichman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justine, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
In the business and entrepreneurship space, there’s not just one way to do something or make your ideas come to life. When starting a business, entrepreneurs need to get scrappy and resourceful with what they have available to them and hone in on how to use those resources accordingly. It’s important to think outside of the conventional box and to stay true to the core and the vision. To do that, you need a lot of creativity and tenacity.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our company is unique because we are not necessarily taking one position; we hear what others are doing and share that information so others can make more informed choices. There’s so much information that our community presents us with, but our main goal is to take that information, dissect it, be insightful and make that information accessible and digestible for others. We strive to be a companion to those who want to move the needle and to truly understand the impact of their work so we can make better choices for ourselves and for the planet. We always ask ourselves, so, why are we making this choice? Why is better? What are the consequences of not making better choices?

As an entrepreneur, there are constantly challenges. Some things come easier to my team and myself, but we are dedicated. NextGen Purpose and Essential Ingredients takes a collaborative approach to address issues. When starting my business, I chose something I am passionate about and that passion gives me motivation to keep going. I recognize where my heart is and what I’m good at to help guide my direction and I put together a team that hones in our what they’re good at and what their passionate about and collectively this is driving our mission forward.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, I’d invite my friends and family to my home to have a home cooked meal – The best way to connect or bond with friends and family is to bring them into my home and share a meal in a comfortable environment.

I love to try new cuisine in my area. Some of my local standby spots are Dita’s, Hog Island, and Sushi Ran. Aside from local spots, I like to travel into Healdsburg for a wine tasting at my favorite winery, Davero Winery and Farm, for their biodynamic selections.

A fun day always brings me and my guests to the various farmers markets where we can pick up local, fresh foods that are available in the area. We’ll take the dogs to Stinson Beach and get lunch at Parkside for the gorgeous scenery and great food.

There’s always a lot of live music in the area. For a fun evening, we’d incorporate music and dancing at the Baltic Kiss in Richmond or Geelou in San Francisco for swing and balboa dancing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My team is a small but mighty, female powered group. All of us where many hats and have various roles to get things done at NextGen Purpose and Essential Ingredients.

I find inspiration in other entrepreneurs, founders and policy makers within our field that are leading the charge to make thoughtful changes in the food sustainability space.
