We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Vu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I always knew I wanted to tell stories. Though when I graduated university, it was 2 months before the COVID-19 pandemic/lockdowns happened. So, much like everyone else: I was navigating the uncertainty of the job market while trying to pay bills.

Although I always knew that I would pursue a creative career, I never thought that the medium in which I would tell stories would be art, but I’m really glad I ended up on this path. It’s been extremely fulfilling to have a space / make time for creating.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m currently a freelance artist/ illustrator. I mainly draw for companies, though I also take on personal commissions from time to time. My style is heavily inspired by Disney works. I enjoy storytelling and communicating through art, and my goal is to be able to capture moments / stories as honestly and authentically as possible.

I have a shop where I sell my art, and have recently launched a youtube channel where I explain my process and how I learned the skills necessary to sustain a full-time living off art. I think the path to being an artist is extremely diverse, and there’s so many different avenues to achieve a living off of it. As someone who started out as an instagram artist (and still am!) I want to help others navigate this changing social environment and capitalize on the opportunities that can come with putting your art online.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would do all the tourist attractions! I know some people who hate being tourists, but we’re all tourists to a degree aren’t we? So why not go to places that are staple gems?

Visiting museums and downtown are a must. The beach too. I love food, so exploring different hole in the walls would be fun. I’m not too much of a planner, so if we happen to pass by a place that catches the eye, why not go in for the experience?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Everyone in the online community who has encouraged me. Especially the ones who loved my art when I wasn’t that good at it.
