We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Laughton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor of my success is that I provide a one-stop shop for homeowners looking to build their dream homes. What makes me unique is that since I am both the designer and contractor the client only speaks with one person from conception to completion throughout the entire process.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was born with the ability to draw anything. I was oil painting at the age of 12 and I mastered mechanical drafting at the age of 14. I studied Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design and Space Planning as well as tested out of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University. After I graduated from college, I moved to New York City where I worked for two architects and the top 5 developers in Manhattan. I can officially say that I made it in New York City because that’s where I learned my professional business skills. I moved to Southern California in the early 90s where I fell in love with the 1930s Mediterranean Architecture and the California Bungalows. All of my natural artistic abilities along with my professional experience enables me to make people’s homes better so their lives are better.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Of course when people come to California they want to go to Hollywood, Disneyland and the beach. Since I am a member of the Los Angeles Historical Society, I love taking tours of historical architecture, especially the Art Deco era. I am a foodie and I love to cook. Fine dining restaurants are the next important places on my list to take people, including historical restaurants such as Musso and Frank and the new fusion restaurants with fabulous chefs located all over Southern California. I also have a passion for good barbecue since my grandfather was a chef and barbecue king back in the day. I love cornfed beef cooked medium rare and I would never pass up a chance to eat at a steakhouse like Morton’s or Mastro’s Ocean Club. For lunch, I am always up for carne asada street tacos with fresh handmade salsa only. Needless to say if you haven’t figured it out yet, I am a gourmet cook and I love all types of food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am continually grateful for all of the support from my hardworking and loyal staff, the dedicated and talented sub-contractors that work with me on a daily basis and the clients I collaborate with to create their dream homes.
