We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Ann Stricklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie Ann, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I have been a life long artist, illustrator and designer. The one thing that has helped me maintain my momentum is always having a dedicated space in which to create. It helps me to get to work as inspiration hits. I work daily, so my dedicated space is always active. My tools are in place and all I have to do is sit down and get to work.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work is very eclectic, diverse in style, medium choices and well as subjects. My creations have found an audience in just about every age group and gender. I am very proud of myself for listening to what I felt was the right direction for my work when I was getting serious about my styles. I decided to maintain my joy of experimenting and remaining diverse even though I was told to pick a style and master that one direction. I work digitally as well as traditionally. I take projects that are in all budgets and directions. I work throughout the night at times, and I feel under paid most of the time, but I am still practicing my profession of choice. Everything I create and design, I do it with love and passion. I do not place products in shops and gallery’s that I do not love myself. I am thrilled that I can now offer affordable fashions, home goods, gifts and art prints through on-line vendors. My designs are produced on products that are affordable and shipped directly to the buyer. I get excited when I, unexpectedly, see my designs worn in public. My original work is available is a wide range of galleries and even Oceanside Museum of Art. I am so proud that my work finds forever homes through so many galleries and shops.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have had many friends visit and we have used San Diego as one big play ground. There is so much to do in my area. I always take my guest to Encinitas to show them whatever is happening there. Encinitas is a true artists hub. Before the virus hit, here was always an even or show happening. The beach, at any time of the year, is always on the itinerary. Long Beach hikes and climbs are so much fun with my guests. Most of my friends expect to get sandy at some point. Torrey Pines, Moonlight Beach, Coronado, Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach are my go to places. I like to explore new areas as well. There is not shortage of restaurants in San Diego. I like to pick the restaurant by ambiance because food is always good here.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have found that I enjoy promoting other artists work while I promote my own. I have friended so many talented artists’ that just do not spend the time to promote their creations. I found that I can help promote them while promoting my own. I learned this while donating my time to work with the 101 Artists’ Colony and Encinitas Arts Alive community programs. I have worked with them for almost 20 years. I do whatever needs to be done to help other artists promote their work. I feel this has helped my name get out in the community even more than is would be by just selling, promoting or donating my work alone.
