We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Galicia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I took a HUGE risk by leaving my 9-5 to pursue a passion. It was hard in the beginning due to having to go back to school and not working full-time. Risks come with sacrifices. It wasn’t just my sacrifices but my family’s as well. We had to cut back on certain things, for a while.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a professional makeup artist for weddings and special events. I am most proud of all the beautiful people I get to meet and work with. Being part of someone’s special day really is rewarding. I work on my own as well as with other fellow artists that have now become friends of mine.
It wasn’t easy getting started as you have to start from the bottom and build your way up just like with any other job. After many years in the medical field, I decided to quit my job with the green light from my husband and go to beauty school.
Things were not easy, doing this came with many sacrifices.
I had to build a portfolio and practice many times on different people before I felt confident enough to start applying for jobs. I did this by networking on social media and collaborating with other creatives and models so that we could put ourselves out there. Doing this helped me land a career in the bridal industry. Today I work full time as a makeup artist and I don’t regret a thing!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego Zoo, Seaworld, Coronado, the beaches, Convoy and downtown, old town. Oh my goodness, so many places!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
