We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
This is such a great question originally, I’m from San Diego California so that’s where I grew up as a kid and went to beauty school at Bellus Academy. However, when I met my husband, we both decided to move up to Portland, Oregon for several years to grow into our careers, which is where I initially got started doing hair. I started working at a kids salon, which was scary at first because cutting kids hair is no easy feet but I quickly became efficient and skilled earning me the title as “Lead Stylist” after four years of working at Sit Still Kids Salon. When I left that place I knew I wanted to still do kids’s hair but not on the same level of volume, mind you during back to school time I was booked back to back with over 15 kid clients on my schedule. I wanted to expand into the Portland Oregon hair industry in general and offer my skills to the whole family. This was definitely tricky at first, but I found two different salons The Teal Flamingo and Fringe & Friends Salon that allowed me to be me and attract the kind of clientele that I wanted. That’s my biggest tip, to always remind yourself to put out into the universe what you want to attract. What I learned in Portland, Oregon is that people there are attached to their hair, but they like a more natural lived in vibe so I did way more cutting and lived in color, blended highlights, as well as some funky, vivid color here and there for fun. But overall, most of my clients in Portland taught me to embrace the natural side of beauty, which is why I think I am super knowledgeable in hair, product knowledge, and scalp health. Personally I enjoy empowering and teaching my clients how to keep up their hair by giving them healthy routines and products and to have their individualized style suited for them. One last thing to add is that I was pulled to move from Portland Oregon to Lompoc and start my career over here in the central CA coast because my husband got a great job opportunity ( working as a coffee roaster /director of coffee for Zaca Coffee) we couldn’t pass up plus living closer to our immediate family is a bonus especially since we plan on starting our own soon.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m what you call an “intuitive” hairstylist, I like to work with my clients to see what type of hairstyle and color would work best for them by taking a lot of factors into play like what they do for a living, what hobbies they practice, workout regime, diet etc. I look at things like they’re face shape their eye color amongst other things like even their lifestyle and take into account all of these things to see how their hair comes into play with all this. I’m very much go off of giving people what they want and I simply just want to make their life easier but giving them a hairstyle that works with the hair not against it. I tend to explain my process and what I’m doing and why to inform those in my hair and basically lay it all out on the table for them. I myself I am a creative soul and definitely have some tendencies that lean towards having ADHD and dyslexia but I just think of those is my superpowers by embracing and attracting fellow clients and creatives that are on the same wavelength as me. It’s important to me being in a loving community and lifting others up and supporting other fellow small businesses because at the end of the day were real people and honestly just need a smile or a good haircut to make us feel better.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, this is actually something that may be happening the spring where I’m hoping my best friend Vanessa visits me from Portland, Oregon during the flower field season. Not only do I hope she comes to visit me, but I’ve been thinking about what we would do and where I would take her from checking out the local beaches like surf beach, jalama or go for a scenic coastal drive up to Point Sal Overlook and hike, the beautiful nature here is so vast and serene. I would love take her thrift store shopping in Santa Maria because they have some really good deals and very affordable thrift stores, this is a hobby and a big part of my lifestyle since I’m also a vintage reseller at Jupiters Spark Collection here in downtown Lompoc. I would also love take her to eat at I on eye for pizza as well as maybe visit some local wineries like Babcock or Melville for a wine tasting. I think it would be super fun to take her to all the different towns around the Santa Barbara County from Solvang to downtown San Ynez, Los Alamos and Los Olivos. Basically anything revolving around vintage shopping, thrifting, good eating as well as time spent in nature are all the things that her and I both enjoy. Maybe I’ll even take her to a local Hot Springs that I’ve heard about up in Gaviota or do a hike around the area like lovers loop trail, I hear this one is amazing during the wildflower season!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shout out to my own mother, Sue Jones who has been a hairdresser for over 30 years and has encouraged me to join the industry. I’m so honored to take after my own mother and pursue a passion of creativity in the cosmetology industry. I also would like to shout out a few of my old salon bosses in the past like Jenni Cunha and Nhu Vo from Sit Still Kids Salon, Sarah from the Teal Flamingo salon and of course Rosie Sumstad from Fringe & Friends salon my most recent place I worked at back in Portland, Oregon. I’d also like to recognize my new fellow coworker and boss Courtney Miller from the Bluestone beauty Collective who has been super supportive through my transition working here in California allowing me to work at both of her Salon spaces, which is Studio M in downtown Lompoc CA, and the Bluestone beauty Collective in Santa Ynez. Without the support of these wonderful women in the industry I would not be where I am today.
