We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
What’s one thing about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
In landscape and wildlife photography, people generally don’t realize the patience it takes to get the right photograph. I recently had a photograph of a barn that I was able to capture the sun setting through the center and that was a year in the making. In general finding a place that has potential is just the start of the process, for instance getting the right weather conditions around your scene can take many attempts or just waiting on the right season that works best for the scene can take time. Photography is very much a hurry up and wait kind of thing but patience can be is a photographers best attribute.
Other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I have always enjoyed being outdoors but I didn’t pick up photography until a few years ago. My family and I started traveling more and at the time photography for me was just capturing a photograph on our travels to put on our wall for memories. That quickly turned into a passion when I realized what I could create. I was determined to learn as much as I could about the technical side of a camera and then putting it to practice.I decided to start selling my work in 2019 and the sales have continued to grow each year since. Now as a family we take as many trips as we can throughout the year and photography now pays for those trips.
What is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand?
Well I think like the other question, my photographs are much different than the ones that I was putting out when I started in 2019. With experience over the last few years and realizing and taking advantage of the marketing side is just as important as a good photograph. It doesn’t matter how great a photograph is, if noone sees it, it doesn’t sell. So it really goes hand in hand. But in most cases and I think it holds with photography too, if you are passionate about what you do and enjoy it, with hard work you will generally be successful
Do you have a favorite quote or affirmation? What does it mean to you / what do you like about it?
There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.-Ansel Adams
Ansel Adams is a legendary landscape photographer that many of us look up too. His quote here is so true, even though he understood all of the things on the technical side of a camera and compositional rules. As photographers it is good to know the technical and compositional rules but also to know when to break them. Some photographs work best outside of those boundaries ”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about.
I am a landscape and wildlife photographer. When you have put the work in and scouting a location nothing is more rewarding when it all comes together and watching it unfold. I recently spent some time at the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It took a few mornings at the Bodie Island Lighthouse for the conditions to fit what I had in mind, I had all but given up but after 2 hours of watching and waiting, it all came together and I had one of my favorite photographs of the year.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have enjoyed photographing many places in the last few years. Jekyll Island Georgia comes to mind as one of my favorites. I spent a few mornings at Driftwood Beach and it’s a photographers dream. From that small trip I had a photograph when a regional art contest and another on the cover of a worldwide magazine.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well my family first and foremost, they have always been supportive in my photography journey. Without them I would not be the photographer I am today
