Meet Jonny Smith | Co-Owner Newport Surf Camp

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonny Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonny, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of our summer surf camp is the joy and transformation our campers experience every day. Surfing isn’t just a sport here—it’s a gateway to unforgettable memories and personal growth. In today’s tech-filled world, connecting kids with the ocean and nature is more crucial than ever.
When kids catch their first wave or conquer a fear of the water, their confidence soars. They form friendships, learn resilience, and discover a deep respect for the environment. These are life lessons they carry far beyond the beach. Our camp isn’t just about teaching surfing; it’s about fostering a love for the ocean, building self-esteem, and creating bonds that last a lifetime. It’s a joy to see their faces light up with each wave they conquer and every new skill they master. That’s what truly defines our camp’s success—making a positive impact one wave at a time.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets us apart is the heart and soul we pour into creating not just a surf camp, but a community. We’re all about making surfing accessible, fun, and transformative for kids of all backgrounds. Our camp focuses on more than just learning to surf—it’s about fostering confidence, connection, and a lifelong love for the ocean. We make sure every camper leaves with core memories, new friendships, and a deep respect for nature. And let’s be real—where else can you laugh at wipeouts, cheer for epic rides, and have beach bonfires all in one place?
Getting to where we are today hasn’t been a smooth ride (pun intended). Starting out, there were challenges like figuring out logistics, ensuring safety, and standing out in a sea of other camps. But the key was staying focused on our mission: to build a community where kids feel supported and inspired, both in and out of the water. We overcame obstacles by listening to feedback, growing from mistakes, and staying true to our roots.
The biggest lesson we’ve learned is that surfing is always about the bigger picture. It’s not just about catching waves—it’s about perseverance, balance, and learning to laugh when you wipe out (because life is a lot like surfing that way).
What we want the world to know is that our story is one of gratitude—for the ocean, for the surfers who came before us, and for every kid who walks into our camp and leaves with salt in their hair, a big smile, and a little more confidence. We’re here to create stoke, build a community, and remind people that in the midst of life’s chaos, we can always turn to the ocean.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Surfing is such a rich, soulful tradition, and our camp wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible surfers and ocean lovers who paved the way for all of us. We owe so much to the legends who brought surfing to life—people like Duke Kahanamoku, who shared the sport with the world and showed us that it’s more than just riding waves; it’s about connection, culture, and community.
We also want to shout out the local surf communities who’ve always been the heartbeat of this sport, keeping its roots strong and its spirit alive. Their passion for the ocean and dedication to sharing this beautiful lifestyle inspire us daily.
And, of course, a huge thank you to all the parents, families, and our incredible team of instructors who believe in the magic of surf camp and trust us to create these unforgettable experiences. This journey is a collective effort, and we’re endlessly grateful to ride the wave with so many amazing people by our side!
