We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Shar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, how do you define success?
Peace man, its all about peace. It’s interesting because my definition of success has changed as I’ve gotten older. In my college and entery level years I would have defined it soley by income. At this stage on my life, I tend to put the emphasis on fulfillment. If you are lucky enough have a career which you enjoy, in which you can find genuin fulfillment and can support yourself financially at the same time, even if not pulling in the millions I thought defined success as a youngin, in my opinion that’s the sweet spot. I count myself unbelievably fortunate to have found not one but two simultaneous careers which encompass all of those qualities as the Supervsing Producer of Sulavon’s SheShed and Project Manager at DTLR (Downtown Locker Room)

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
When people ask how I got to my current professions, the truth is, I really have no idea! I had no clear direction or career path when I was younger. One day, I saw a friend of mine drive past my house in a Mercedes, so I called him and asked him what he did for a living. He told me he owned apartment complexes, so I decided I would do that too.

I found a job as a property manager and immediately hated it, but from there I worked for a local nonprofit overseeing small home renovations. Through my contacts at the non profit, I was introduced to some “big shots” at the local hospital. They brought me on to oversee some multi million dollar construction and renovation jobs. I moved on to some government contracting work and got to the point where I was making really good money but was miserable.

I had met Sulavon during that time and she convinced me to try my hand at producing an OTT TV, show since the skill sets are somewhat similar to Project Management. I agreed and that caught the attention of DTLR who contacted me and suddenly, I’ve got two jobs I actually love!

The journey was rough, a lot of difficult times, long hours and misery.I had no clear goal and was just going through the motions of my daily work life, but always with my eyes open hoping to find a rainbow at the end of the road but severly doubting they actually existed.

As it turns out, with hard work, the right connections, and a bit of luck, they do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

In which city? Ok, my itinerary, my rules, this is a traveling weekend. Lets start off in NYC where we’ve got to hit Times Square, check out some Broadway shows and grab some pizza. Off to Chicago to hang out at The Galloping Ghost arcade. Google it if you’re in the area, I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of hours there. Then it’s off to San Diego’s Mission Beach for some surfing, back over to the east coast to hang out at The Clevelder in Miami’s South Beach and ending it all with a Ravens game up in Baltimore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My folks, who have always instilled the idea in me that there was nothing I could not accomplish if I put my mind to it. My son Nate who by his very existence encourages me to keep pushing forward and of course Sulavon who constantly encourages me to see beyond my horizons and explore… more.
