We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Lopes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Being creative and productive are two very important aspects of fulfillment and happiness for me. Simply going with the flow of life doesn’t cut it. I don’t march to a different drummer, I am my own drummer. My goal is to make a difference and impact others for the better through my art. I’m not always successful, but ultimately this is what motivates me and drives me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an artist. My artistic medium is LEGO bricks. I am not associated with the LEGO Company in any way, I simply use their product to attain my artistic vision. I am also a published author with a book that focuses on my LEGO art. My book: New York City: Brick by Brick is available everywhere books are sold. My path and growth so far has been very natural and organic. But, a key aspect of its growth was simply saying “yes!” to opportunities as they presented themselves. The path has been comfortable, but also a lot of work with balancing a demanding professional career while I built my business. But, I am now working professionally and full-time as an artist. The goals of my work are to inspire others through my creativity. My hope is that future generations will learn and accept that being an artist is a viable career and also is beyond fulfilling and rewarding. I share this message while participating in exhibitions and LEGO conventions and also sharing my work with schools and libraries.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d definitely recommend a drive up the coast on the 101 through the beach towns, stopping in shops and restaurants along the way. Additionally, I’d recommend spending time in Hillcrest, North Park, South Park, Liberty Station and Little Italy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my fellow artists and creatives, in all creative mediums. You inspire, motivate and surround me with positivity and support. Thank you!
