We had the good fortune of connecting with Jolynn Hansen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jolynn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew I wanted to be an Interior Designer as early as nine or ten years old. I didn’t always know what that would look like, but I always felt pulled to this field, especially for residential work. After college, I worked with various design related companies (custom cabinetry, high end custom stonework, etc) before landing a design assistant position at a high-end luxury furniture and design store. While I truly enjoyed the team and the work there, it did not feel like authentic design to me because I was limited in what I could source, as well as the size of projects I could take on. I knew that I wanted more. More time with my family, more opportunity to expand my creative portfolio, more control over what I worked on and when I worked… I chose to start my own company because I realized that all of the things I felt I was missing from various employers, I had within myself to provide.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a high-end luxury residential interior designer and organizer based in Las Vegas, NV. What sets me apart in my market is that I provide full interior design services, as well as professional organizing, separately or as a combination package.

I officially opened my firm at the beginning of 2021 and was immediately booked with multiple referral clients. Since then, I have been steadily booked, solely from referrals and repeat clients.

The journey to where I am now has not always been easy. I am a solopreneur and let me tell you, it is hard work. I went from working in a corporate environment with amazing benefits to being completely on my own with licensing, insurance, business backend management, and logistics, not to mention DESIGN and client communications. It is a lot to manage but I have learned to take things one step at a time and recognize that a city is not built overnight.

I have learned to embrace the fact that this truly is just the beginning. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that I will have many lessons to learn, successes and failures, and all of that is necessary to get to where I ultimately want to be. I am building my brand to be as authentic as possible. I think it can sometimes be scary for people to watch as you grow because they may witness you stumble and fail and make dumb mistakes. On the flip side of that, I remind myself that we are ALL growing and making mistakes and the more we show up as our authentic selves, the more respect we earn. It’s okay to accept help sometimes because we are all stronger together.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Las Vegas, you can imagine there are quite a few ideas I could come up with. While I personally tend to be more of a homebody and usually avoid the Strip, there are a few spots that stand out for visitors.

1. I love taking people to the Bellagio fountains. The water and music choreography is so fun to watch and the energy is always great. You can often witness wedding proposals, elopements, and more in front of the fountains as well. The Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical gardens are also amazing and transport you to a dream world of flowers and seasonal scenes.

2. The container park in downtown Las Vegas is a fun spot with more of an artsy feel. There are several cute little shops and restaurants with live music playing.

3. If someone is visiting for a whole week, I would definitely take them up to Mt. Charleston to show a change of scenery. The mountains are some of the best parts of Vegas in my opinion.

4. Restaurants to visit would include Toast Society, Juans Flaming Fajitas, and Burgr by Gordon Ramsey.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Goodness, where to begin!?! I feel as though every person who has touched me professionally over the last several years has, in some ways played a part in me getting here.

One specific person who stands out is a former Senior Designer I worked under, Christine Woodward. The time I had with her was brief, and yet I feel that I learned so much from her in respect to the interior design world, interpersonal communications, and above all, classiness and professionalism. Christine, among many others, also encouraged me to pursue my Master’s degree and went as far as to write one of my recommendation letters for acceptance. Sometimes, it’s the smallest push or interaction that can make all the difference.

Also worth noting, I am the youngest of six in my family. Both of my parents, along with many of my siblings have pursued entrepreneurship and have shown me that you can be your own boss and make it work. It might not always be easy, but it is worth it.
