We had the good fortune of connecting with Joleen Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joleen, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When we open Lucys On Lighthouse almost 4 years ago, we are open six days a week. We opened in July 2020 right in the smack middle of the pandemic and we were forced to go down to three days a week for two years because of the shut down. We never went back to six days a week. We finally added another day to be four days a week Thursday through Sunday, but it made me realize how important a balances to your work life and your social life.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Lucys On Lighthouse is a fun surf and skate themed hot dog restaurant in Pacific Grove California. Our Decour definitely sets us apart from other restaurants in our area. We like to have fun here, and it shows all over our walls that are littered with our favorite music, posters, pictures of our friends and family members surfing and skating…graffitied bathroom walls, and all our locals having fun with their pictures through the hallway, We like to play music and have a good time people come here for the experience and the food! We have a beautiful beer garden outside where people can listen to music and hang out with their family and friends by the fire pit …..stare at our surfboard fence. It definitely always attracts people in that are driving by and may have never heard about us before.

We hold many fun events here from school fundraisers to hotdog eating contests, car shows and live music in the beer garden every weekend. We try to support our community in anyway that we can..

After my husband passed away in 2019 my motto was to say yes to the opportunities that come my way. That led to the opening of my restaurant in a roundabout way. With my back up against the wall, I had nothing to lose. Taking a risk was huge and I stayed up many sleepless nights and had a lot of nightmares going through it, but it all paid off. It was definitely not easy. I didn’t know if I was making the right choice investing so much money into a place during the pandemic that I didn’t know would be a success or a failure. But like I said, I have nothing left to lose. So I jumped right in.
I worked for about eight months getting it ready to go. Since the world was shut down, everyone had nothing but time so it was actually good timing. I’m so proud of the environment that we created for community!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let’s just say Lucys On Lighthouse is most Peoples First stop when they come into town or come back from college! It’s definitely a gathering spot to hang out in groups.

If my best friend is coming into town, that would be my first stop as well and then maybe to the Salty Seal for some pool and some beers and then late night to Alfredos for some after hours fun

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The inspiration for opening my hot dog restaurant came from three years of running the local baseball field snack bars. I owe it to them for the inspiration for my restaurant. I was making hotdogs for people at 9 AM at the baseball field and everyone loved it! I wanted a place where I could make more creative and fun versions in the hotdog.
