We had the good fortune of connecting with John C. Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John C., what role has risk played in your life or career?
I thrive on risks and adventure. I like to take risks where I know I have control or at least a large part of control. High risk and high reward. Well, there’s the other side of risk also. Not all have turned out that great. Some are expensive and some physically hurt! Live, learn and get better, John Wooden said it best, “Learn as if you are going to live forever, and live as if you are going to die tomorrow.” I would not be where I am today without taking big risks. I went “all in” twice the past 10 years to start new companies. Once with the start up of TrueScripts (Pharmacy Benefit Management company) 10 years ago and the second with Mom Water (Ready-To-Drink Alcohol business) 3 1/2 years ago.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have been extremely blessed to be part of two amazing start up businesses. The first was TrueScripts and the second was Mom Water. Two totally different businesses, yet both are so much alike in many ways. Both were a huge, calculated risks. With each, first and most importantly, I had the encouragement and support of my wife. With each company, I had a strong personal relationships with my business partners prior to starting our businesses. I 100% trusted my partners/friends in both start up companies. We did not follow the traditional business model with either company. We blazed our on trail and forged our own path in each respective business segment. We created our company mission and values that were who we are as people and how we want to build our team and run our business. Both companies have a culture that is unique and special. We say our culture is “not normal” but in a positive way. Work does not feel like work with either company. I love each of our teams and have close friends in each company. Each place is special and has made me a better person because of being a part of each team.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My wife and I moved to Arizona 4 years ago from the Midwest. Bobbi and I love to host and our house is rarely empty. We love to explore the many wonderful places to go and visit in this huge “outdoor playground” of Arizona.. We jet ski, hike or drive our ATV on the many beautiful trails and explore the many fine dining places all around us. We love life and love sharing it with our friends, family and teammates that helped us achieve who we are where we are blessed to live.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am who I am because of my Mom. All of my good qualities come from her. She had a huge caring and loving heart. Her faith in God was rock solid. She was an inspiration and big influence on all of our family. We lost her to last year and Heaven gained a special angel.
My life would not be the same without my wife, Bobbi Jo. She has always been my #1 fan and supporter. She believes in me more than I do myself. I have taken two major career risks with Bobbi’s encouragement and support. She has been patiently waiting for me the past 10 years to (semi) retire so that we can spend more time together. It takes a tremendous amount of time and dedication to start a new business and that means your family sacrifices time away from you. I am slowing down with my work starting this year. My priority and focus of time is not work any longer, but my loving supportive wife. Bobbi is 2.0 of I am who I am because of her. I am so grateful to her in more ways than I can count. I can’t wait for us to spend more time together with Bobbi and with our family.
