We had the good fortune of connecting with Johana Flo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose to pursue a creative career because it allows me to do what I love and be true to myself, all while providing for my family! Ever since I was a little girl I took part in creative and artistic activities as hobbies and even professionally. From singing in front of my family, to having a central role in the Mexican version of Sesame Street (Plaza Sesamo). I’ve always loved doing what makes me happy and I never had a problem letting others see it, until I did. For a long time in my life, I gave up on doing what I loved in exchange for following a more conventional path. During that period, events in my life unfolded that in all honesty, broke me little by little and caused me to leave my passions behind. Although I don’t regret this part of my life in the slightest, I missed out on many opportunities. Fast forward a couple years, I’m married, have two handsome boys, and am living in San Diego with them. I started using Instagram as a hobby and began using it more and more until eventually I realized that it could be a way to have fun and share about what I love, while making a profit. Many times I felt as if I was too old, or not interesting enough, or as if I didn’t have enough to say, but that simply is not true! There were many insecurities and challenges I had to overcome, but with persistence, passion, and patience I managed to gather a community of over 22K followers! After many highs and lows, many laughs and tears, I was able to reconnect with my creative nature and even use it as a way to meet my financial needs. Following my dreams has taken me to places I never could have dreamed of, and will take me even farther! It’s never too late! You can do what you love no matter how old, young, rich, or poor you are. You have something to say, something to express, and something to add to the world. No one else can be you like you can, so go out there and be what no one else can! -Johana Flo

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been attracted to the arts and expressing myself creatively. When I was little I used to participate in singing and lookalike contests and at one point I was even a main character in the Mexican version of Sesame Street! Later as a young woman I did ballet, pageants, and even more singing contests. Basically, I’ve always been extra! For a while, I distanced myself from those kinds of things in order to pursue something conventional, or “normal”. There were many reasons behind the distance I took, I got a new little crack every now and then until those cracks produced a chasm which in all honesty almost swallowed me whole. That period wasn’t all bad though! During that time, my first bebe guapo (handsome baby) was born, I met my super hot hubby, and moved to the beautiful city of San Diego! At first, Instagram was simply a hobby that allowed me to share about the things that I love with my friends, family, and anyone else who wanted to see; however I began to use it more and make more professional content, I saw a great opportunity. Instagram became a way for me to do and share what I love while making a profit. It wasn’t easy though! As any good thing in life does, it made me, and still makes me, confront many of my insecurities, pushed me to grow, and helped me reach the truest part of myself! Many times I felt insecure about my age, my content, and even my English which was challenging to me being a native Spanish speaker. Even with these challenges in front of me, and although many times I wanted to, I never gave up. I researched, got help, experimented, and persevered through tough times. In all honesty, the challenges I faced, subsequently helped me become better in many areas of my life. With the help of my incredible family, many laughs, many tears, many pictures, and many outfits, I was able to gather a community of over 22K followers! I always try to do things out of love and genuine care, not only business, which keeps the wonder alive even when it’s hard! While I still have a ways to go and have many things left to experience, I am extremely grateful to have come this far! There is no limit to the places you can go, no matter how old, how young, how experienced, or how unexperienced you are, you can achieve great things! It’s never too early and it’s never too late! You are irreplaceable, unique, and meant for great things. There are people who want and need to encounter what is within you, and nobody else can express it like you can. If you are passionate, then persevere. Your greatest battles will lead to your greatest victories. -Johana Flo

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is one of the most beautiful and interesting places in the U.S. and there are many little spots all over that make this big place come alive! One of my favorite places is a spot in Otay Ranch called Otay Sushi & Crab! It is a beautiful restaurant with some of the sweetest servers you’ll ever meet, and some of the most delicious food you’ll ever eat. My personal favorite thing to order is their Lost at Lake roll, which I am currently craving very badly! Another gem in this awesome city is James’ Coffee Co. near Little Italy. It is, as it’s name implies, a coffee shop. My family and I really enjoy going there as, not only is the coffee delicious, the atmosphere is incredible and it takes the experience to a whole other level. A third place that’s 100% worth checking out is the incredibly cute Le Parfait Paris in Downtown! It’s a gorgeous cafe with some if the most delicious chocolate croissants I’ve ever had. Finally, a place that surprisingly isn’t some kind of restaurant is Seaport Village! This place is just beautiful and perfect for going on a walk with a close friend and enjoying the atmosphere. San Diego is a great and diverse city with many places to check out, hopefully you’ll visit some of these places soon and find out just why I love them so much! -Johana Flo
