We had the good fortune of connecting with Joevany Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joevany, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Diversity and determination. For Futura Fiberglass Systems LLC, the most important factor behind our success is the “can do” attitude of tackling and accomplishing a wide of variety of unique projects. Over the years, our hands-on fabrication methods and processes for repairs have allowed us to approach complex projects with simple solutions, all while satisfying the customers specific wants/needs and exceeding expectations
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a fiberglass technician, we must have a few different skill sets to survive within the composite industry of Southern California, but our company specializes in fabricating both simple & complex molds of various shapes & sizes, to then laminating the molds with the appropriate type of fiberglass to create the desired part. I believe this skill set is what sets us apart from most of our competitors. We are most proud of being able to take on projects of various magnitudes, some of which were the first to ever be produced, and that feels really good, to be able to say we helped create that. The company is a family operated business with origins from the mid-1970s, I was employed with the company for seven years before becoming co-owner. After the passing of my father 2021, from COVID-19, My uncle and I took over and have since been driving full speed to continue to legacy and embrace new opportunities within the industry. Was it easy? Absolutely not, As someone who was still in the stages of learning the craft, I was entirely unfamiliar with the business aspect of running a company. However with plenty of trial and error, support from our networks, and an incredible amount of grit, we’ve been able to keep our company alive and strong through drastic change and adversity.
One of the best and toughest lessons I’ve learned so far, is one I’m sure many are also learning, and that is to trust the process and keep putting your best foot forward. Sounds easy but it can get challenging among the nuance. True success doesn’t happen overnight, and there will be highs and lows when navigating the business/trade world. There were times I felt overwhelmed and lost, Some of my most frustrating moments go from not knowing how to properly submit bid which lost us a contract, to improperly laminating a part because I didn’t factor in the temperature of the room. No matter what, we continue to function with a solution oriented mentality. That any problem we encounter can be solved, and through solving these problems we gain the necessary experience to continue to move the company in the right direction.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As someone born and raised in San Diego, id have to say the first place to visit would be any of our beaches and beach towns and the weather always almost calls for it. Some of my personal favorites are Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, and Coronado. Nothing beats being able to lay in the sun, feel the waves crashing into you for awhile, and then grabbing a cold drink and good meal. If we’re in Mission Beach, then were getting sushi on the rooftop at Cannonball, before or after we venture around Belmont Park. One day would have to be spent enjoying one of my favorite hobbies, shooting at P2K sports, an indoor/outdoor shooting range, followed by a trip to the virtual reality arcade Anvio VR Park in Plaza Bonita Mall to play against a horde of zombies. One of the most interesting places to check out though has to be Balboa Park for the architecture and any of the many different museums, but i’d likely take you to my favorite, the Natural History Museum. We’d also dedicate a night just to some fine-dining, at any of my favorite places-Cowboy Star, June Et Jolie, Trust, Juniper & Ivy, Azuki Sushi, we can debate later which one is the best, or either of my favorite seafood spots to check out in Eastlake, El Viejon and Thovo Mariscos and Birria food truck.
The cool thing about San Diego is there is always something to do! We have the luxury of being able to drive up to snow-covered mountains when the winter season hits, and sit on the beaches and be outside almost all year long any time of day.
The thing cool thing about the people of San Diego is that it feels like everyone you meet has an interesting story. It’s pretty easy to mingle with strangers and start a discussion anytime anywhere and I think that is a really unique aspect of the city that makes San Diego and its people so unique.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Id have to thank my grandfather, my Late father and my uncle. Without these men, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My grandfather mentored my father and uncle, and started the legacy I plan to continue. Thanks to them, I have the passion and drive to continue on learning the trade passed onto me, working closely with my business partner and Uncle Jerry. My mom, my older sister and partner are always here to encourage me through tough times both personally and professionally. They’ve helped me tackle difficult problems and I am so grateful to have them on my team showing me all the love and support. I also have to show huge gratitude to our clients, they have been with us through good and growth the last 2-10+ years and we continue to elevate and do better for them who trust and believe in our work.
