We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyne Chavarin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jocelyne, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I started my business, I was constantly working on my craft. I was making earrings daily, searching for materials, inspiration, taking pictures, shipping out orders, and managing my social media page. This was great for me at the beginning, because I was working to get the word out about my business, and I was also stuck inside my house just like everybody else, due to the pandemic. I do think that as a business owner, there really isn’t a time in the day where my mind isn’t thinking about my business, but I have tried sticking to a schedule and a routine in order to keep more of a healthy balance. I open my shop Thursday – Sunday, so that leaves me with three days in the week to organize myself. I try taking Monday, and Tuesday “off”. Basically, these days I focus on other aspects of my personal life. On Wednesdays, I am back to working on earrings at home, and working on any orders that need to be packed and shipped. This balance has been extremely helpful to my overall life, and mental health, as I believe that rest in essential for everybody. I really do encourage everybody, to take at least a day to rest and recharge. You will feel motivated, and ready to jump into another work week.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Aside from being a business owner, I am very proud to say that I also have a career. I just recently graduated from college, with my degree in early childhood development, and a multiple subject teaching credential. In other words, I am a teacher. I think this has helped me in my business, because it has taught me that I can really accomplish anything if I set my mind to it. I was finishing my degree, and completing my student teaching while also trying to start my business, and this was of course difficult but not impossible. I learned a lot about myself, mostly that everything is possible if you have the right drive and motivation. I want the world to know that my business is a passion project, and was accomplished with a lot of work and love. I can agree with the quote that says that if you find a job/career that you love, you will never work a day in your life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is filled with gems! It is so hard to pick because there are so many small businesses to check out. What I will say, is that I encourage everybody to come check out the amazing businesses in Barrio Logan. It is a community that is full of life and culture, and it’s an inviting environment filled with restaurants, coffee shops, and small shops. There is building on Logan Ave called the “Art Hub”, which is where my shop is located, and it is a collective of 25 small shops and art studios. There is something for just about everybody, so come check out our community! I promise you will love it, and want to keep coming back,

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been a great support system for me throughout my business journey. My husband has been my number one fan and supporter, and has been an essential part in pushing me to continue my business. Another really important person, is my cousin Valeria. She has been my right hand when it comes to working events with me, and running my shop from time to time. She will be especially important in these upcoming months, as she will take over my business while I take time off to have my baby. I couldn’t run my business if it weren’t for the incredible support and motivation from my family. I also want to give credit to the amazing friendships I have made with other small business owners in my community. They keep me inspired, and motivated to keep going. It is an amazing feeling to be surrounded by like minded people, that are so encouraging and positive.
