We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyn Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jocelyn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I came across a quote a few years ago that has helped define how, at that moment, I wanted to move forward in personal life and career. “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” This spoke to me profoundly because its so easy to slip into a place of fear when contemplating big life changes. Circumstances can contribute to that fear, or hold you back from your ultimate goals in life. For me, risk plays a huge part in change, whether it’s personal change or taking a plunge in career goals, and in my case entrepreneurship. Risk feels like an exciting place for me now, and allows me to open up to challenges, work through problem solving, and ultimately learn so much.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My sister/business partner Jordan and I started our beverage mixer company in 2022. This Girl Walks Into A Bar: Mixers + Snacks was born from our mobile bartending service This Girl Walks Into A Bar, serving southern California, and areas of Texas, New York, and Arizona. We launched our organic Margarita mix in 2022, and now have a Spicy Bloody Mary mix and Pineapple Mint Mojito mix hitting shelves in November.

As kids we were always self-driven and scrappy, and encouraged by our parents to experiment creatively. We always wanted to build some sort of business together. Jordan’s background in bartending and team management, and my background in design and project management allowed us to start with two established skill sets.

Starting out professionally as a graphic designer, I never envisioned my future to be in the beverage industry, playing dozens of rolls in our company, ranging from managing manufacturing to sales and shipping to recipe development! One of the main rolls I have is as art director and brand manager for our company. My design experience has played a huge role in how I work to follow through with a project from ideation to completion. Jordan and I have complementary skills, and have naturally fallen into rolls we have strengths in. Our main challenges revolve around learning curves. We’ve supported one another as we’ve maneuvered through understanding manufacturing and beverage industry vocabulary and standards, quality expectations, and fully understanding our consumer demographic.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a north county San Diego resident, and over the years have discovered some gems in my area. Our go-to activity for friends visiting is the beach, obviously! We tend to stay local and take the Rue de Chateaux access near Carlsbad village, or Tamarack to play beach volleyball or swim. South Oceanside offers so many new food options, and our favorites are Revolution Roasters coffee, Home State Tacos (Spicy Palomas), Anita’s Mexican cuisine, and Pacific Coast Spirits (they make a delicious carrot juice margarita!). Further south we’re huge fans of Praeger Brother’s bakery, and in Encinitas Haggo’s Organic Tacos and Birdseye Kitchen. On Sundays, our company This Girl Walks Into A Bar: Mixers + Snacks has a regular spot at the Leucadia Farmer’s Market, where we sell our non-alcoholic cocktail mixers. This farmer’s market is pretty incredible, offering a variety of foods and handmade goods, as well as music and a large grassy area to enjoy a picnic. The Encinitas Botanical Gardens is a lovely place for a stroll, and one of the best mild hikes in the area is the Annie’s Canyon Trail.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My business partner and sister, Jordan, has been an enormous positive influence in my life and growth both personally and professionally. Her drive for success brings energy to our company and her “can-do” attitude and positivity helps me get through the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur as we both are met with large learning curves on a daily basis.
