Meet Jian Tanedo | Music Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jian Tanedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jian, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Putting myself out there was one of the most important and life-changing decisions that I have ever made. I have been making beats on various busted laptops and computers for almost 2 decades. I would share some of my work on social media sometimes back then but there really wasn’t much engagement, So I never really bothered to share my music consistently. I would think “What’s the point? No one is really going to hear it”. So I would just make a bunch of beats and have them sitting in my hard drive. It wasn’t until 2021 that I played my music in public for the first time at an event called “”Battle Bot”. I surprisingly got a lot of positive reactions to my beats and I got 2nd place! That night was a sign from the universe that I needed to keep doing this music thing. I ended up Getting 1st place at the event that came prior to this one and it has been a snowball effect ever since. All it took was for me to just go outside and get involved with the community more.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a music creator. I have been making beats for a very long time and I still to this day consider myself a student of the craft. I feel like I am at a place now to where I can be my most authentic self in my production and not have to follow any set of rules. I still have such a long way to go and at the point I am at now, is only just the beginning. This is a path I took that has no set of directions. It’s definitely not easy, especially if this is something you want to do as a career. The scary part of it all is that there is absolutely no guaranteed success in it. There are no promises. It all depends on your mindset, the relationships you build and your work ethic. I got to where I am now because of consistency, Delusional self-belief and also the relationships that were built along the way with amazing people. I hope that some day I can show the world that no matter how impossible your dream is, you can literally make that a reality and speak it into existence. You don’t have to abide by the rules that are embedded in you. Make your own rules and live the life that you want.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hmmmm…..I think the first thing we would probably do for old times sake is go to little Caesars pizza with our own individual pizzas and just kick it on the hood of our cars like we used to back in the day. We’d probably go to the beach or go take a random LA trip and do improv street performances on the Santa Monica pier. Or just have deep and also meaningless conversations at Vallartas taco shop while having a big box of carne asada fries.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh this is going to be a long answer so be prepared for this one! All of these people have played a very significant role in my life and have helped me get to where I am today.
First I want to make a shout out to my older brother, JR aka “Jay”. He is responsible for me for even wanting to make music in the first place. I also want to make a shoutout to my fiancé, Amanda, for her unconditional love and for always encouraging me to never quit, no matter what. My sister, Rheyna, for being my other half and Ride or Die. My best friend, Matt, for being my literal day 1 supporter and for always keeping me in check. I also want want to shoutout to my good friends and fellow producers Reyrzy and Mysterkeyz. As much as we all joke around, They both inspire me to the highest degree to be a dope music maker just like them. My friends Ric Scales and DJ Root for all they do for the San Diego Hip Hop community. A big special shoutout as well to my 7th grade music teacher, Dean Hickman, who taught me how to understand music theory and made me a better musician. I was failing band and became an A student later on!
I also owe a lot of my mindset and success to a book called “It’s all in your head” by Russ. That was the book that poured the gas on my dying flame and turned it into wildfire. Last but not least: ALL the Dance communities around the WORLD!
