Meet Jessica Serrano | Balloon Designer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Serrano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When starting my balloon business I had a full time job aside that I will do Monday-Friday and yet still get home pickup my one year son at that time, make dinner (when I could) and answer all inquiries and messages from clients or future clients until late every night. It was full force into putting all this energy to this new business with along side being a first time mother. Obviously weekends would be from juggling 2-11 events. When I wasn’t working I was organizing my social media or get material going. There was always something needed to get done. After 2.5 years doing the same I was grateful to be able to leave my full time job after having my daughter and fully focusing on my what I love which gave me more time for my family. That’s when I learned how to take a small step back. Not just because I was becoming a mother of two, but for my mental health.

A great way that helps is “me” time which helps me so much mentally; my workout routine in the mornings. How now having a more flexible schedule, I can take off and rest with my family. Or if there’s an important date for my family, I now save that date for us months ahead. My balance will keep changing drastically, but my biggest thing is adapting to those changes and being kind to myself along the way.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I am most proud of is seeing my progress throughout the years. It amazes me to see balloon decor from a year now, they keep getting more “luscious and elegant” as my clients express in those words. As a business owner, you are always learning. Which something I learned that can be what I will want my brand to be recognized for or it’s signature look.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well other than loving balloons, I love food! I love exploring new trendy places in LA or the OC. I will definitely take them to Ysabel in Hollywood or to have a cocktail in Downtown LA at Perch. I love restaurants with a scenic view. Then of course, to try out cycling! I love working out and staying active, as I believe it helps me so much as my career is a fast pace environment we are always running around trying to get it perfect before events starting lol.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all I want to thank everyone and anyone that has mentioned my business name in a room of opportunities. It is such an amazing community that my best clients are all recommendation from other amazing clients. The one person I would definitely give credit to is my husband for being so supportive not just mentally, financially, but with being an amazing dad and having to take some days off from his own business to make my schedule work. To my mother, that has put many things aside for me to take on work no matter what time of day she is there to watch for my children. To my sister Maria, who gave in not knowing where this could go and was there in every event till this day. To my amazing team, without them Sky Balloon Bar wouldn’t be where it is. We take on so many challenges and so many hours to make it perfect, as they enjoy as much as I do.
