We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
To me taking risks is part of life. You can never truly get ahead or to your goals without taking risks. Risk has played an important part in not only my life in many ways. The risk of leaving everything behind when I convinced my husband to take a job traveling all over the U.S. working in his field and again when I decided to open my business. If I didn’t take the leap I would have never opened my business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Drunken Whoopies is unique in that it brings pretty uncommon dessert into the spotlight and lets it shine. Unless you are from Maine or Pennsylvania you probably haven’t heard or let alone had a “whoopie pie”. I take flavor profiles not traditionally seen in these delicious cake-like sandwich cookies and create delicious treats inspired by coffeehouse flavors.

If it wasn’t for the encouragement of the staff at my husband’s job, then my husband himself convincing me to create Drunken Whoopies it never would have crossed my mind. Drunken Whoopies was a happen-chance venture. Before I created Drunken Whoopies I was making whoopie pies as gifts and constantly was told I should start selling them. By mid 2020 I was finally able to get time to create the business menu and get it off the ground.

Was it easy? In a way, yes since it was and still is just me baking and filling orders as I receive them but there are always challenges with any business and finding a way to make time to run a business with 3 young kids is never easy and takes coordination and patience from me, the kids, and my husband.

Lessons I learned…patience and perfection do not always go together. Nothing will be perfect the first time around so you will remake and remake the same recipe 10 times before you find the right one. Hitting a bump in the road won’t derail you and to overcome them you just have to try harder or think outside the box next time.

You should know as a brand Drunken Whoopies…well I think the name says it all. There is a fun playful side that invokes the childhood nostalgia of making traditional style Maine whoopie pies yet brings that modernity by adding untraditional and coffee shop flavors to the cake-like treats. No one wants plain and boring chocolate and vanilla anymore they want unique flavor combinations.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am pretty low key and love being at home so my week would consist of relaxing yet fun places to see.

Gaslamp, Pacific Beach and Old Town are must stop areas for food. The zoo and safari park for a little exercise and visits with all the amazing animals, oh and have to visit the museums in Balboa park. Legoland so the kids can take a day to build and ride the rides. La Jolla Cove to see all the seals relaxing and watch the waves. In the summer snorkeling with the Leopard sharks is a must do. Have to take in a Padres game. Sitting back on any of the beaches and enjoying the surf and sun would be the perfect end to any trip.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A couple people deserve a little credit for my success…the staff at my husbands job for encouraging me to take a leap and create my business. Also, my husband because without him I wouldn’t have the support system I needed to get where I am or try to take that leap. He is the rock who keeps me tethered to the ground.
