We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Fontanilla and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jen, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
This hustle culture and mentality that you have to work hard, with these incredibly long, over worked days, in order to be successful, and wearing the “OMG, I’m sooooo busy, I barely have time to eat” like it’s a badge of honor.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been working as a graphic designer specializing in displays and packaging for the movie and video game industry for the past 25 years. However, in 2005, I realized that despite having a successful career, I lacked knowledge about managing my own finances, which bothered me. This led me to become a financial advisor, as I loved the idea of helping others understand their money in a simple way, especially since financial education is often lacking in schools.

In recent years, I transitioned into a coaching role and discovered my passion for helping creatives with their money mindset. I love uncovering the subconscious patterns that hinder their financial success. Ultimately, my goal is to help them thrive by embracing their unique talents, earning what they deserve, and living a fulfilling life.

From a money mindset perspective, I help creatives develop a healthier relationship with money and boost their self-worth. This involves exploring past patterns, the influence of parental teachings about money, and how these factors impact their current financial decision-making.

What sets me apart is my extensive experience in both the creative and financial realms. I understand the challenges creatives face, from idea development to running the business side of things. Additionally, having worked as a financial advisor, I possess the technical expertise and logistical understanding necessary to provide comprehensive guidance. Furthermore, my background as a money coach allows me to offer a unique perspective on universal and spiritual laws and energies related to money mindset, shaping how we perceive money and how it affects us.

The most fulfilling aspect of my work is witnessing the positive changes in the people I help. Many have experienced increased income, achieved their dreams of relocating, or even pursued alternative careers that fully utilize their creative potential. It’s not just about financial improvements; their overall lives are positively transformed. Seeing people win lights me up!

If there’s one thing I want people to know about me, it’s that I won’t judge them or their past decisions. I’ve made major mistakes myself, so I understand what it’s like. I firmly believe that everything can be fixed over time and it requires a compassionate and experienced approach towards money and dreams. Finance is an emotional aspect of life, and money carries energy—simply focusing on the numbers isn’t enough. My approach is unique, driven by deep care and compassion for those I get to work with.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being a creative, I have to mention Balboa Park, of course.

Imagine strolling through lush gardens, surrounded by vibrant flowers and breathtaking landscapes. Balboa Park is like a nature lover’s paradise, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and just soak in the beauty around you. Plus, the park is massive, so you’ll have plenty of room to explore and find your own little slice of tranquility.

But my favorite part is that it’s also home to a bunch of top-notch museums and cultural institutions. You can get your art fix, learn about history, or geek out over science. It’s perfect if you’re into all those things. From classic masterpieces to interactive exhibits, there’s always something fascinating to see.

Then if you want some night time action, definitely head down to the Gaslmap area. The vibe is super fun and I love just walking everywhere. The streets are lined with trendy bars, swanky clubs, and incredible restaurants.

But it’s not just about the nightlife. The Gaslamp area has a killer daytime scene too. There are chic boutiques for some retail therapy, awesome rooftop lounges for killer views, plenty of street performers to entertain you, and of course just people watch.

You will always find something to do from getting culture to grabbing drinks and making memories.
