We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Derks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jen, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Honesty. All good collaborations come from setting clear expectations and the understanding of the full context of a situation. People are complex, and being honest and sometimes vulnerable, will simplify the complexity of collaboration. Guessing how someone feels or what they think shouldn’t be a burden to add to the work, and it won’t be if all participants are honest and open.

What should our readers know about your business?
Four Fin is a branding and design studio that believes that a good brand is at the core of a good business. We’re a team of 5 women designers and strategists who help to shape brands that people resonate with, and our clients are excited about leading. We geek out on design and bold brand moves. There’s not a shortage of inspiration out there. It’s really fun work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, beaches for sure. Hopefully they’d be down to try surfing with us, if not that’s cool, they could still enjoy the post-beach fish taco or two. I’m a fan of Ocean Beach as long as it’s not a Wednesday. I’d also likely take them to Balboa Park or the Zoo. I mean, it’s world-famous.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give my shoutout to Sam Mazzeo of Better APC. A recent client, vendor, and also friend, Sam knows that humanity matters. He cares about his community and always puts his values front and center.
