We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Burns and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My business began very organically. I used crystals and Art as a way of therapy for myself. Being a Mother of 3 and a wife I found myself completely focusing only on my husband and children. I had forgotten about myself. Which was ok for awhile but then my own issues from an abusive and toxic childhood began unraveling before me. I found that the more hours I put into my art and getting quiet with myself the better I felt. At this point it was not a business. It was a pile of canvases. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to display them because they were so personal my emotions and feelings right there for everyone to see. But as friends and family saw my pieces they encouraged me to begin selling these pieces. That is where Healing Art by Jen began.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is something that I hope you can feel something. Whether I make a piece for myself or if I am commissioned to create a piece. I set intention and release emotions into each piece. This is where I feel like I am a little different than other resin artists. My art is not just about making money. I am invited into peoples homes to create a healing and beautiful piece that is a collaboration of both the customer and myself. I use my own intuition and emotions about that person to create a piece that will bring them healing energies through the crystals and the beauty through the design. The feeling I get from somebody seeing and feeling a piece for the first time is amazing. I still get messages from customers telling me how much they can’t stop staring at there new art. I used to be a Wedding and Event designer. I loved this job. Party planning and working with people was amazing. But very stressful and very last minute. I went from a very outgoing and social job to an isolated and private job. It was an interesting shift and with Covid I didn’t really have a choice. But it was something I quickly got used to. Now I can’t imagine doing anything else. I crave and can’t wait to process, and continue healing as I create art. I see myself doing this and other things that empower, motivate and inspire other women to come out of there roles that they are not satisfied in and honor what is desperately trying to get out. I would like to build a community of women that want to claim there power and show it off to the world to inspire others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them for dinner or appetizers and drinks at 333 by the Oceanside Pier or the Oceanside Broiler at the Oceanside Harbor. Best waterview in town. And the best mai tai’s. I would take them to Artist Alley on the First Friday of the Month so they can meet and see some of the nicest Artists in Oceanside. I would take them for Lunch at Z Cafe in Bonsall. A quaint and amazing restaurant.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Shoutout has to begin with my children. They were the ones that saw and felt something that I didn’t at first. They could feel what I had left on the canvas. They could see the beauty in the pain. It was with there encouragement I took it to the public. I also have to recognize a friend and co-artist. William Lewis of Lewis Creations. Will is a friend of mine through our kids. When we became friends he was the artist. Not me at all. As we became better friends I started to share my love of art with him. He instantly supported me and encouraged me to go with it. He thought I should be willing to share it with the world. It is with his support and lots of encouragement I decided to start selling and showing my pieces at the First Friday Artwalk in Oceanside. It was within this community I had found my people and felt like maybe I was truly doing something that was not only good for me but I could also share with the world and have a business.
