We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Piske and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I was younger, I left the corporate life and pursued a dream of working in the music industry in Nashville, TN. I wasn’t married and I spent all my time working in the studio. Sessions became the most important thing to me and I would cancel plans with friends if someone called me for work. This continued even as I started a relationship and got married. There were countless times I would cancel a date, or weekend plans because I had a session. It took a national tragedy for me to see that I needed a better work / life balance. Before 9/11, my plan was to work in music the rest of my life. Sure I wanted a family…someday, but I also knew that I would likely put work over family and miss out on ball games and dance recitals. I justified it in my mind that I would be still be providing for them. I also hadn’t done anything about actually starting a family other than getting married, so the idea was just that, an idea. After 9/11 I took a serious and honest look at my life. I had accomplished more than I had dreamed I could, so now was a good time, to find follow new dreams. I left the music industry, went back to work in an office, and started a family. That’s not to say that I suddenly had a perfect work / life balance. I failed many times and put work over family in the years that followed. I still struggle with it even now. But I am more aware of it, and I have open and honest communications with the people that are impacted. I do miss a ball game from time to time, but I make it to most of them. I try to make the most of the time I do have to spend with the ones I love, and find ways to be efficient in my work, so I have more free time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a Realtor, I approach everything I do with honesty and what’s in the best interest of my clients. My goal is always to ensure I have provided the best service possible while navigating the purchase or sale of a home. There are so many challenges and obstacles that can come up, and I am most satisfied when I am able to work through those challenges and either hand them the keys to their new home, or place that SOLD sign on their house. As such, I refuse to double end a transaction. Not that I couldn’t navigate representing both sides, but I never want to be in a position where there is any question of my ethics. It’s simply not worth it. Many of my clients have become friends and that couldn’t happen if I was always trying to find an angle to make more money for myself. It’s never about that for me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a tough one because there are so many great things to do, see, and eat!

For things to do, there are the obvious ones of the beach, San Diego Zoo, Balboa park, the Embarcadero and Sea Port Village, Sea World and Lego Land. But my favorite thing to do is to catch a Padres Game. Petco Park also happens to be one of my favorite places in all of San Diego. Being a season ticket holder for many years, this is an obvious choice for me to take someone to a game.

While there, we would also need to get some food and drinks in the Gaslamp area. Whether it’s Bub’s, Half Door Brewing Co, Social Tap, or Casa Octavio, you can’t go wrong at any of these places.

But if you’re looking for old school Mexican food, you have to go to Las Quatro Milpas. Yes, Old Town has great food too, but Las Quarto Milpas is where I take people when they want something unique to San Diego.

I’d also take them to do some wine tasting in Ramona with a final stop at Cordiano’s for some pizza, wine and watch the sunset.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my girlfriend Traci. When I first told her I was thinking about getting my real estate license and wanted to pursue this path, she supported my decision. As I went from getting my license to starting my career, the ups, the downs, the late nights, the missed weekends, she always had my back. She provides encouragement, trust, support, a sympathetic ear, and so much more. Without her initial faith, I may not have pursued this path, and would be a lesser person for it.
