We had the good fortune of connecting with Janet Phillips & Celia Shelley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janet & Celia, what do you attribute your success to?
Community…community is so important for every aspect of our lives. From the support we receive from the local adult school and the artists we work with there, to our family, to our “Real” jobs, we would be lost without our community. Support is a special thing that we do not take for granted. The friendship and support we have deepened through this endeavor is a great gift.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Celia and Janet both have their own unique styles and their joint endeavors create a unique art collective between the two of them. Because of the broad range of styles, their works appeals to many. One thing we are really proud of is that one of our works was displayed at the Orange County Fair. We are constantly looking for growth. It isn’t easy, but worth the effort with the support of our enthusiastic friends, family, and community. Community is really the backbone of any creative’s success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We both love exploring in our own cities and through out Southern California. Honestly we would spend our time exploring the many different environments that So Cal offers. We love the beach, the desert, and the mountains. That being said, number one on our vacation list would ALWAYS be Aardvark Clay in Santa Ana. We often like to take our lunch breaks to shop here as they are only open Monday – Friday. A favorite of ours when we are at the 4th on 4th event in Long Beach is the Hip Pea. When we are in Huntington Beach you can find us at Thai Gulf. We, of course, also like to explore local art exhibits at places like The Broad and The Getty. Occasionally you might even be able to find us enjoying a bear in Syncopated Brewery in Lakewood.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Both Celia and Janet credit their parents for their creativity. Janet’s parents were always supportive of every new craft, art style, and skill she wanted to learn. From taking photography to learning to work on her own car. At a young age Celia and her mom would create many sewing projects, starting crafting fairs in her elementary school years. Her parents were constantly making their own décor and catering their own parties. This created a sense of self identity that allowed them to explore their artistic passions until they landed on ceramics, together.
