We had the good fortune of connecting with Janet Alarcon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janet, how do you think about risk?
I think risk is something that stops a lot of us from attempting to accomplish our goals. I let my risk of failing stop me for many years, that I even stopped massaging for 10 years because I would tell myself that it wouldn’t take me far in the industry, I wouldn’t make money of just massaging, and that I wasn’t good enough. I allowed my fear stop me from taking the risk of starting to massaging again. I put my self doubt and fear to the side and decided to take that risk for start all over. I was so proud, smiling from ear to ear thinking wow I can’t believe I did this, I truly went for it. Then once again, another risk of working from home became another fear and worrisome. I would constantly think who would want to come to my home for a relaxing spa like experience without actually being at a spa? It’s risky working from home there could be many things standing in my way, but all in all my hands had to speak for themselves, not my work area and my massages did just, they spoke for themselves. I built my clientele first with family and friends, then word of mouth, and then from Instagram. I started in September 2020 and my clientele has grew immensely, that my own mind wasn’t letting me see it. Risk could have taken over and not let restart this journey, but now here I am thinking to the future to see where I am going next whether it’s owning my own studio or still work from home, wherever it takes me I know I can do it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I got into Massage Therapy through my mom. As a kid and into my early teens this is something she practiced and she was great. My moms style is very different from mine, but nonetheless she is the reason I got into Massage Therapy. The hardest part besides school, was knowing what route I wanted to take. The great thing about this industry it could truly take you anywhere, there’s so many styles, techniques, and options you could pick from, it’s just knowing what is the right path for you to take. At the moment this path is now leading me to my next adventure of wanting to own my studio in the next couple years to come. Working from home has been great, more than what I expected, so now I am ready to start planning my next steps.

I want everyone to know that I love what I do, I truly do. I love knowing someone will come to me and by the end of their massage they are already thinking about booking another session. This isn’t a job where I come in and put on a fake smile for 8 hours then go home stressed out. This is what I am, this is who I am, and this is what I love! You will always get 10000% from me all the time because I listen and I truly care about you as my client getting that 1 hour or 90mins of peace and tranquility. That’s what motives me to be the best.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I was born and raised in San Diego and I could tell you where I would take someone who was visiting that aren’t already the most popular areas here, Balboa park, sunset cliffs, La Jolla, etc… Everything here in San Diego is exciting, if as a local for 32 years there are many places we haven’t explored. The places to visit are endless.

What I would do for a friend that was visiting, is host a good old fashion carne asada. Invite family and friends to have a great time, really can’t go wrong with a good gathering with food, drinks, and some music.

But since we are talking about visiting areas, I would begin with some breakfast spots like, Talavera Azul in Chula Vista then check out the local breweries for some lunch and drinks. Nightlife I would take them to Pali Wine in Little Italy catch the live band with some wine, can’t go wrong with that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As cliche as it may sound, my recognition would be for my husband, for pushing me to purse Massaging again. When I brought up to him that I didn’t want to return to the corporate work environment and leave our kids for more than 8 hours a day 5 days week, he fully supported me. He simply said let’s do it, what do you need from me, and how can I help. To have the kind of support from him and family was truly rewarding and the push I needed to be where I am today. As far as credit, I would like to give myself some credit. We are our own worst enemy when it comes to accomplishing our goals, so I fought with myself a lot and as mentioned before didn’t let my thoughts become intrusive. It’s great seeing something that was talked about, and dreamt about manifesting itself.
