We had the good fortune of connecting with JacquelineJoAnn Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JacquelineJoAnn, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
To stay true to myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My mother painted and sculpted, my grandmother quilted. I took up fashion design and construction. Over the years I have combined my skills to create my art. In the beginning it was hard to fit in the art world or the quilt world. I push my self and the fabrics I use. I kept doing what I love and eventually my art was excepted into the arts. Now Art quilts are seen all over. Mine are unique because I add textures. I use a combination of hand and machine techniques.
Creating at my sewing machine has allowed me to overcome many obstacles.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First and foremost our local art gallery. Open Space Art Gallery and Studio. Iniga for great artisan pizza. CatsEyeWine bar for a special cocktail. Weather permitting a hike at Starved Rock State park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family. My mother instilling to always believe in myself. My two daughters Ashley and Lauren, for encouraging and supporting me in my art and sewing.
