Meet JacquelineJoAnn Hughes | Fiber Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with JacquelineJoAnn Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JacquelineJoAnn, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I live in Ottawa, Illinois . I grew up in Connecticut, moved with my family to five other states. My mother painted and sculpted, my grandmother quilted. My father was in the Navy. I grew up with a very strong mother. She was creative. I believe my mother has a lot to do with my creativity and strength.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I paint with fabric, threads, and beads. I hand cut my designs. Once the pieces are laid out and quilted, I hand embroidery details.
Fiber Art was not widely excepted into the art world 20 years ago. Myself and many other fiber artists just kept making our art. Now you can see fiber Art in many galleries.
With out the support and encouragement from other artists in my community I would not have been able to push through.
Always listen to your heart. I love what I do. I have mixed my mothers painting, my grandmothers quilting and my fashion design into a unique form of art.
I was discouraged for many years , told repeatedly that I was never going to get anywhere sewing. My art work stayed hidden in my house for a long time. Without encouragement from several artist friends, it would still be hidden.
I just want people to enjoy my art and become inspired.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Iniga Pizzeria Napoletana , best pizza and deserts. Drinks at CatsEye Wine Bar. Visit Open Space Art gallery. Nature inspiration would be a visit to Starved Rock State Park. Downtown shopping in Ottawa is a must.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My daughters Ashley and Lauren. My two sisters Cyndi and Denise
