Meet Jacqueline Hinton | Pilates Studio Owner & Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacqueline Hinton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacqueline, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As the owner of Good Body Pilates Studio in Santa Monica, my thought process behind starting my own business was multifaceted and deeply personal. Here’s a glimpse into my journey and the motivations that fueled my decision:
Passion for Pilates and Wellness
First and foremost, my passion for Pilates and overall wellness played a significant role. I have always been enthusiastic about fitness and health, recognizing the profound impact it has on one’s quality of life. Pilates, in particular, stood out to me due to its holistic approach, emphasizing core strength, flexibility, and mental well-being. I wanted to create a space where people could experience these benefits in a supportive and empowering environment.
Identifying a Need
While working as a Pilates instructor and being a part of the fitness community in Santa Monica, I noticed a gap in the market. There were many studios, but few that offered a personalized and community-focused experience. Many clients were seeking a place where they could feel truly seen and supported in their fitness journey, not just another face in the crowd. This insight convinced me that there was an opportunity to offer something unique and valuable.
Entrepreneurial Drive
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. The idea of building something from the ground up, infused with my values and vision, was incredibly appealing. I wanted to create a business that reflected my commitment to quality, personalized service, and community engagement. Starting my own Pilates studio allowed me to combine my love for the practice with my desire to run a business that aligned with my principles.
Empowerment and Independence
Owning my business also meant having the autonomy to make decisions that were best for my clients and my staff. I wanted to cultivate a work environment that was positive, inclusive, and rewarding. This autonomy allowed me to implement innovative ideas, such as specialized programs and workshops, that might not have been possible working under someone else’s direction.
Challenges and Growth
I understood that starting my own business would come with challenges, but I viewed these as opportunities for growth. I was eager to learn about the various aspects of running a business, from marketing and operations to customer service and financial management. Embracing these challenges has been instrumental in my personal and professional development.
Community Focus
Finally, I envisioned Good Body Pilates Studio as more than just a place to exercise; I wanted it to be a community hub. Building strong relationships with my clients and contributing positively to the Santa Monica community was a key driver. I aimed to create a welcoming space where people could not only improve their physical health but also connect with others and find a sense of belonging.
In summary, my thought process behind starting Good Body Pilates Studio was driven by a combination of passion for Pilates, identifying a market need, my entrepreneurial spirit, the desire for independence, the willingness to face challenges, and a strong focus on community building. This journey has been incredibly fulfilling, and I am grateful for the opportunity to positively impact the lives of my clients every day.

The Journey
My journey with Good Body Pilates Studio began 14 years ago when I started working here as an instructor. Over the years, I grew with the studio, building relationships with clients, honing my skills, and deepening my passion for Pilates and wellness. When the opportunity arose to purchase the studio last year, I knew it was the right step.
Starting Out
Working at the studio for 13 years provided me with invaluable experience and insight into its operations, culture, and community. This background made the transition to ownership smoother, but it was still a significant undertaking. The initial phase involved learning the business side of operations and ensuring a seamless transition for our clients and staff.
Building a Client Base
Having an established relationship with our client base was a tremendous advantage. Their trust and loyalty made it easier to maintain and grow our community. I focused on enhancing client engagement through personalized services and community events, which helped strengthen our bonds and attract new clients.
Overcoming Obstacles
Transitioning from instructor to owner came with its challenges, including managing the financial aspects of the business, navigating market competition, and adapting to economic fluctuations. Flexibility and innovation were key—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when we pivoted to offer online classes to stay connected with our clients.
Lessons Learned
Among the many lessons learned, a few stand out:
– Flexibility and Adaptability: Being willing to adjust and innovate is essential for overcoming unexpected challenges.
– Community Focus: Building strong relationships with clients and within the local community is vital for sustained success.
– Continuous Learning: The fitness industry is always evolving, and staying updated with the latest trends, techniques, and research is crucial.

My Family
First and foremost, my family has been my rock. Their unwavering belief in my vision and their constant encouragement gave me the strength to pursue my dream of opening my own Pilates studio. From my mom, who instilled in me the values of hard work and perseverance, to my siblings and extended family, who cheered me on every step of the way, their support has been invaluable. And the most supportive person has been my husband who is also my business partner and supports me through all my crazy ideas.
Mentors and Instructors
I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best Pilates instructors and mentors in the industry. Their guidance, wisdom, and expertise have been crucial in shaping my approach to Pilates and business. Special thanks to my primary mentor, Katie Santos and Christa Gurka whose insights and advice were instrumental during the early stages of setting up the studio. Their willingness to share their knowledge and experience has had a lasting impact on my career.
The Pilates Community

Fellow studio owners, instructors, and enthusiasts have provided a network of support and shared knowledge that has helped me navigate the challenges of running a business. This community’s openness and willingness to collaborate rather than compete have been incredibly encouraging.
Friends and Clients
Many of my friends and initial clients played a dual role as both my support system and my first customers. Their faith in my abilities and their enthusiastic word-of-mouth referrals were critical in getting Good Body Pilates Studio off the ground. I’m especially grateful to those early clients who trusted me and became regulars, helping to establish a loyal customer base.
Business Networks and Organizations
