Meet J.j. Grayson | Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with J.j. Grayson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J.J., what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I tried everything as a blooming creative – painting, writing, acting, video game design, and costume making – but I knew I couldn’t juggle all of them. My first business was an Etsy shop for my art prints, needless to say, it was a flop. I wrote a novel that never got published and when I tried to create my first video game, I couldn’t get past the start screen. Sewing was the one thing I kept coming back to. This hesitation kept me from mastering this craft. Now, 10 years later I am ready to launch my brand, and although I haven’t dressed a celebrity for a red carpet yet, I still feel proud and established.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a costume designer with over 10 years of experience creating bold, theatrical looks that command attention. Originally from Texas and now based in San Diego, I specialize in high-impact designs that blend intricate craftsmanship with avant-garde fashion. I create for those who thrive in the spotlight—drag performers, entertainers, and artists looking for one-of-a-kind costumes that amplify their presence. Getting this far was not easy, but I don’t regret any of the steps I’ve taken along the way. The greatest lesson that I’ve learned is to keep going, keep going, keep going! I have established a clear flair for theatricality and statement-making details—like sculptural headpieces, dramatic draping, and meticulous embellishments. Each piece exudes confidence, artistry, and a unique creative vision. My dream is to dress celebrities on the red carpet and make looks for world famous drag performers.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When you arrive in San Diego to visit me, expect grueling hikes, breathtaking ocean views, and delicious comfort food. The first stop on our trip will be to SunnyBoys, chowing down on the best southern breakfast i’ve had – and I’m from Texas! We will take a stroll through Balboa Park, keeping our eyes out for insects and bugs to photograph. For lunch we dine at the Craft Taco located inside the Natural History Museum, the best Mexican food in town. I’ll take you to my favorite comic book shops, parks, and as a send off we will watch a drag show in Hillcrest. The trip isn’t over until the last Drag Queen sings, and since they only Lip Sync the trip will never end.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost I have to thank my mother. Without her I would have never learned how to sew or start any of this crazy journey. My mother has supported me throughout my entire life, from every failed business, through ever draft of my novel, everything. And so I owe her everything in return. The drag community in San Diego has uplifted me through dark times. My best friend and muse Victoria El Vato was the first drag queen I ever made a costume for. Continuously working with such an inspiring queen has been the highlight of my career. I’ve also had the immense privilege of dressing Strawberry Mehron, Maddy Mokes, Amber St. James, and the alluring Nykky Hex. From the glamour ghoul Strawberry, to the joyful elegance of Amber St. James, and raging passion of Victoria El Vato each of these queens have their own style, identity, and are pillars of our community. Now more than ever we must come together to support our artists, our trans brothers and sisters, and protect them with all the love in our hearts.
