We had the good fortune of connecting with Imogen Baxter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Imogen, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think having a marketing background is invaluable for the event space as ticket sales are half the challenge. I’m also grateful to be based in a city like San Diego where enough people are hungry for art and culture but the space is not yet saturated. So if you do something interesting, the creative community really show up and support. I’ve seen this with my live music events and it’s been especially true for Design Expo, which was the first and is currently the only interior design trade show in the city, despite how rapidly the interior design industry is growing here. The timing of this concept was also important as people are increasingly interested in buying local, sustainable and original art and furniture, but don’t always know where to find it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Studio Imogen is a marketing & event production company that specializes in building memorable brand and cultural experiences, from intimate dinner parties and live music events to art and furniture design exhibitions.

Together with Jess Tingle of Staging Collective, we co-founded San Diego Design Expo: an annual trade show and interior design expo that showcases San Diego and our neighboring region of Tijuana, Mexico’s, top emerging local artists and designers. This is a project I’m really proud of and excited about as it provides a much-needed platform to showcase for our region’s creative talent while encouraging cross-border collaboration.

San Diego’s proximity to Tijuana has always been what makes the city most interesting to me. From our cultural life, culinary tastes, to architectural styles and design practices: San Diego-Tijuana has something entirely unique to offer the rest of the world and it’s exciting to play a small part in redefining the global brand of San Diego-Tijuana as a bi-national design region.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Eat – Promiscuous Fork coconut shrimp tacos!
Hang Out – Beach at Little Point also known as South of France
Drink – The Whaling Bar, La Jolla
Visit – Drive across the boarder and explore Tijuana and Valle de Guadalupe, “the Napa of Mexico” and my favorite foodie getaway!
Music – always great artists playing Belly Up or The Rady Shell!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are too many to mention 🙂 San Diego’s creative community, and especially my La Jolla community, have been so supportive of my projects. Events are a co-creation and every attendee affects the energy of a space. It’s been beautiful to collaborate with so some many likeminded creatives that are as excited as I am to connect with one another and contribute toward putting San Diego on the map as an up and coming art and design capital.
