Meet Hula Ramos | Broadcast Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hula Ramos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hula, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Honestly, for me as I was getting into my career in media, I watched how people reacted to things I did or said on the radio or on tv. The big thing I noticed is people would say things like, “Thank you for being so honest about your life, whether good or bad. I totally can relate you to you!” The more I heard this, the more I made it a personal goal that if I could change someone’s mindset, attitude, or even change a small part of their life in a positive way, I was doing my job! That’s how I defined my success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The big thing for me was when I joined radio in San Diego on Channel 933 back in 2001. I was considered a “stunt guy” on the radio back in the day. The guy that the hosts would call upon to do the ridiculous stuff like run into a 7-11 and pour a Slurpee down their pants or try weird foods like chocolate covered rocky mountain oysters, or bungee jump or skydive, etc. I’ve done it all! I was that guy who brought comic relief as you drove to school or work in the morning. Was it easy? HECK NO! I came from a conservative, Filipino family who didn’t air their dirty laundry or never made a spectacle of themselves in public. I wanted to just keep making people laugh or smile as they were going about their day.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Where do I begin? This is a tough question, cause you cant do San Diego in a day or even a weekend but if I had a day, I start in Liberty Station and eat breakfasts at one of my favorite places Breakfast Republic! The vibe is awesome and the benedicts are the best by far! You really can’t go wrong. After breakfast, a good walk around the Public Market is great and plus it you are still hungry, you can grab and go from a ton of delicious spots. Id then head out to Balboa Park to the many museums they have there and may even pop into the San Diego zoo for a bit! Why?! Cause it’s “World Famous!” Then for lunch venture to Old Town for some fresh tortillas and the BEST Mexican food! Plus walking around the shops is super fun! Then you have to head to the beach and one of my “go=to” spots is Coronado cause you have to go over the bridge and then visit Hotel Del and walk along the beach in Coronado. Then probably end the day with some sushi and drinks!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I attribute my success to many factors. First of all, not to sound cliché but I definitely attribute my successes to God and being open to hearing his words. Of course, a HUGE support for me is my family! I am Filipino-American and I have a HUGE family which includes my wife, my kids, my parents, my siblings, my cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and of course, those friends who have become family. Lastly, I’ve always brought this up when I was on the radio but a big support for me were the people who live in San Diego. I’m just a kid, who was born and raised in SD and meeting and talking with people all over San Diego definitely helped make me the person I am today.
