We had the good fortune of connecting with Henry Maynard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Henry, why did you pursue a creative career?
Vision of any career was just a figment of my imagination. Growing up in Acton, MA. Being around very scholarly friends. Always feeling like I was not good of enough or didn’t know what I wanted in life. When high school came around; my mom mentioned that I should maybe check out a tech/ trade school to see if that might be a better suit for my learning style and benefit me as well.
As I went through all the vocations at Minuteman High school in Lexington, MA. I came down to two choices to choose my freshman year, Either Environmental Science or Computer tech. I went down thew computer technology route. Through my high school career there on out I would then have competed in 3 state and 1 national competition for Skills USA for 3D Animation. Thinking I wanted to do animation and rigging for companies like Pixar and Dream works.
Low and behold as I started my journey in college attending Huntington University. I changed my major my freshman year as from animation to film production. Cause I really enjoyed the filming process and projects. The following semester of my freshman year. I took my first audio class. That’s when God opened up doors. This is where the fire met the fuel in my soul. My drive for a passion I never really knew was in me till then.
All my life I have been doing live sound for house of worship since 2006 or 2007 give or take, I never really knew audio engineer could be a career for me. Never really put to and to together. Or felt the confidence in me in it. But back in college that freshman audio class. My professor sat me down one day after class and told me she could see the drive and passion for film sound I had.
Fast forward to now in LA since 2016. Grinding away. Enjoying the learning and networking process. Actually feeling blessed and learning to humble my self and drop my ego at the door. I am now helping film makers craft their visions and stories with a sprawling soundscape that just translates and encapsulate the audience. So that I try to not take them out of suspension of disbelief.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It was not easy to get to where I am now. I had a lot of ups and downs. Did that whole “starving” artist feeling at times. Early on in my LA career I came in with wanting to be the best. Well that crashed and burned. I learned to than humble my self. Show humility and to put blinders on and focus on my trajectory then worrying about who’s making it big. I am proud of and what sets me apart from others. I have scene my self and heard it from friends and family of how persistent and chasing my goals I am. I think my inner Finnish blood come through as they have a phrase called “Sisu” meaning strength, perseverance in a task that for some may seem crazy to undertake, almost hopeless. Life and work is never easy especially in LA.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to some cool hiking spots up around Pasadena. Go over to the Huntington gardens and check out the Japanese Garden their. I would take them to beaches up in Malibu especially Zuma beach. Its one of my favorites. The aquarium is a neat place and would hit that spot up and grab some dinner at Holy Cow in Santa Monica. I like a lot of the restaurants up here in Glendale and Burbank, CA area. I would show them my church I go to over at Story City Church and introduce them to my community. As well as take them to universal studios.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I first want to give a shout out to my mom and dad who I know is looking down and has a smile on his face of knowing how proud he is for me, for motivating me and pushing me to find my potential in life and work. For God blessing me to be in a country and opportunities can come up. You can chase your dream and have a drive and passion for the things in life that you want to obtain. Thanks to a few of my mentors and people who have helped me carve my career to where its now, thanks to Andy Hay, Andrew Koyama, Trip Brock, Marti Humphrey, Charles Maynes… Just to name a few people who have, are, and always looking out for me in one way or another.I wanna shout out my church community at Story City Church. They have helped me find my community, my tribe, my people that I can call my LA family. Being away from my family 3,000 miles away across the US. Its key to have some kind of community around you.
