Meet Henry Finch | Portrait Photographer, Retoucher and Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Henry Finch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Henry, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Honestly, it’s just what I’ve always been best at for whatever reason. I fell backwards into photography from trying to be a singer/songwriter. I still write music on the side but the initial reason I purchased my first DSLR was because I wanted to start filming quality guitar covers and start a YouTube channel. which was short lived. After that I just thought myself “Well, I have this camera I might as well get some used from it.” After some shoots with a friend of mine that was into modeling it kinds just grew on me and I also realized there was money to be made from it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel what sets my photography apart from others is my love for film and creating an overall atmosphere in my work. One of the best compliments I’ve ever gotten on my work is when someone told me that one of my shots looks like a screenshot from a film. I try hard to convey just that look so it feels great when its recognized by others. I want my work to be more than just photos. I want the viewer to be able to imagine a whole story in their mind with one image. I got to my current level professionally the same way a lot of people do; cultivating relationships, social media and spending countless hours to work on my craft. I can honestly say it wasn’t easy. I am a self taught photographer, visual artist, graphic designer etc. I basically learned everything on YouTube which isn’t always easy. Sometimes to learn one technique you need to learn all the different ways to accomplish it and then find the best method for you or even mix all the methods yourself. One of the main things I’ve learned along the way is pretty basic; if you put the work in, you’re gonna see the results out of it. What I want the world to know about my brand is that my work, my business isn’t just about one thing. It’s about doing and seeing things from a variety of points of view and being the thread that ties everything together and you don’t have to settle for a niche or being one thing only.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, man I love this question. In my time on social media I’ve made quite a bit of friends from different states and would show them around whenever they came to visit L.A. Right off the bat I’d take the up to Griffith Park to do the main trail across from the observatory. You get such great views from there and it feels very California. After that we’d probably go have lunch at “Carney’s Restaurant.” The whole train car restaurant is one of my favorite things and they have amazing burgers that don’t weigh you down. Of course, I’d have to show them the beach but instead of going to Santa Monica I’d take them down to Redondo Beach. I absolutely love it there it’s a whole vibe and great for anyone that loves seafood. When it’s time for dinner I Would’ve made a reservation for “Pip’s on La Brea” which is a small jazz bar with live music in mid-city. I love sitting right next to their stage with some pizza and wings and a cold IPA. Other notable places would be In N’ out of course, Cabo Cantina, Hollywood Reservoir and The Getty.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would honestly love to shoutout my friends and family for all their support. I’m always trying different things whether it’s experimenting within the photography field or just in life and I appreciate those close to me not having some sort of passive or lethargic attitude about me and my career as I try and carve out my niche. That said I’d also like to express a special shoutout to my childhood friend Javier Solis who to this day keeps me grounded and is my sounding board for a number of things. I probably wouldn’t have the confidence in my work that I do without him. He is a talented filmmaker whose opinions I value and he hasn’t gotten sick of me asking him for his two cents just yet.
